This part is frightening:
Dog wardens from the state showed up at Brown's Wolf Den kennel, repeatedly, for inspections.
"I was cited for a piece of kibble on the floor and five strands of dog hair. They took a picture of that, they walked around, snapped pictures and don't tell you why," Brown told the newspaper.
Are we hobby breeders supposed to hide?...

That’s the typical how ‘get out of an embarrassing or telling answer’ quote. I think we all know anyway......
Fawn, you did the typical “are you still beating your wife” thing. I don’t breed them for money, I breed them as a hobby, to breed the *perfect* golden retriever. I show them, and yes, I do sell them (I can’t possibly keep every puppy and frankly there are many people out there who are happy to buy them—and of course I’m sure that makes you angry). My question to you is, why are you so concerned about what other people do? Instead of spending your time on FR whining about responsible breeders, why don’t you take the money you spend on a computer and the internet and your time that you waste online and rescue every dog out there?
I actually do guarantee them for their life. And, should the owner no longer want them, I take them back and make sure they get another good home. That doesn’t happen often as I am very careful in my initial placements.
I'd buy a dog from a breeder well before I'd ever consider a shelter dog again. Shelters are too expensive and my wife had to answer more questions and jump through more hoops than we did when we bought our damn house. They even called our vet to get copies of our current and previous pet's records, I was away on business at the time and they would not let my wife take the dog until I could make a trip back to town and sit down with them so they could interview me. WTF?!
I told them to kiss my butt, I'd rather go to a puppy mill. I called a friend who had a dog similar to what the wife and kids wanted, asked him for a contact number, called the breeder, met him the next day with the family and went home with an 8-week old miniature dachsund to keep our black lab company.
It's the people that think they care most who are the reason more dogs die in shelters each year. People are too damn stuck on themselves to realize they are the problem.
The perfect dog? Did you ever hear of Twisty Cats? She bred for what she called the 'perfect' breed too....
Well...if you would rather buy from a puppy mill than a shelter, I have nothing else to add to that. Nuff said.
Fawn, please feel free to kiss my ‘purebred puppy’ butt.
I own a pound mutt (we’re his 3rd family), a rescued Australian Shepherd pup (got him at 15 weeks) and a purebred Border Collie puppy.
The pound mutt is a great dog in some ways, but has some problems from his previous two owners teaching him bad ideas. The Aussie gives every indication of becoming one of those all-time great dogs...but he was rescued from a puppy mill and could have genetic problems later on.
So could the Border Collie, but he’s from good working parents. The odds of a weird genetic problem popping up in him are remote. We got him because we love Border Collies, and you only get that package in a Border Collie from working lines. No show collies, where the characteristic personality is much less likely to appear. And no, good purebred dogs do NOT have inbred physical problems, unless you get one of the weird breeds. Labs and BCs from good breeders are very healthy.
Meanwhile, you insult people who work hard to keep good lines going. I’ve swapped enough personal messages with some of the folks on this thread to know how much they love and care for their dogs.
Should I refuse to have children because there are kids in need of adoption? I’ve got two adopted and one by birth - was our youngest daughter a moral evil?
Around here, about 50% of pound dogs are pit-type mixes. Don’t want them. And I don’t want to always need to TRY to untrain bad training by irresponsible owners!
Warning - Lots of pics.
If anyone is embarrassing themselves on this thread, it is you, Fawn.
Who died and left you in charge of FReeper's pet choices?
I had a similar experience with http://www.azbordercollierescue.com/adoption.asp
I filled out applications, talk to them in person, and had a home inspection done...then they decided that, although we had owned Border Collies before & I’m retired, we couldn’t ‘handle’ a Border Collie.
They were willing to consider offering us a lower-drive mixed breed. Then my wife saw a rescue with 7 pups, one of which was an Aussie. The next day, we had El Rust-bo - a lovable little fuzzball of energy.
“Your breeding costs us taxpayers TONS of money.”
Brytlea - you didn’t tell me you were getting rich off of the taxpayer! And I thought PBC was making cash FROM you...
Fawn’s concern for shelter animals is matched only by her
eagerness to kill every pitbull, Rottie and Chow on the face of the earth.
Fawn, I gotta say you don’t know what you’re talking about. My breeding costs the taxpayers zero, since my puppies never end up in shelters. I incur extensive costs before breeding, and in your scenario only the wealthy would be able to afford to breed dogs. Is THAT what you want?
Twisty cats (and yes, I do remember when those came out) has nothing to do with what I do. Of course, you don’t have an argument that will sway the public, so you have to resort to tossing everything at the wall to see what sticks.
Your arguments are typical of Animal Rights Activists. And, you are still spending some of your money on something other than rescue, so why are you wasting that money that could go to help homeless dogs?
That’s a fact, Kanawa.
Define a puppy mill.
El Rustbo! LOL That’s hysterical!
LOL yes, I’m getting so rich that my husband would love me to stop!
LOL! El Rust-bo?
We have an Auusie named Rush too.
Here he is sailing.
Auusie = Aussie
I rescued a Chow from the streets about 3 months ago.
