Recommendations For A Great Buying Decision (Puppy)
Buying A Puppy ^ | April 9, 2009 | Onelifetogive

Never buy from a Pet Shop.

If you buy a puppy from a Pet Store, you have missed the entire point of this site. You don't get to see the parents, you learn nothing about the conditions of the kennels, and you don't get to question the breeders. In short, you are supporting the Puppy Mill industry. PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!

See both parents of the puppy.

If the breeders make any excuse for why you can't see both parents, walk away. One of the parents died, ran away, is sick, or is visiting his cousins in Albuquerque…..whatever excuse they make. There are way too many wonderful breeders out there for every breed. You don't have to deal with one where you can't see the parents. See the parents, hold the parents, and play with the parents. If you don't like the parents, you won't like your puppy when he grows up...

Half pit, 1/4 rott, 1/4 pyrenees???

That sounds like a nightmare to me. I have experience with all three breeds and if you think the Pyrenees if going to mellow out the other two, you are mistaken. Pyrenees are among the most ferocious beasts pound for pound on the planet. They are fearless and don't domesticate very well. They are still a true working dog.

Good luck on that dog and don't tell your insurance company because they'll probably cancel you.

I’m gonna probably upset some folks here.

I think shelters are a scam that sucker in the bleeding heart fools. I don’t trust the humane society. THey are thugs that charge doggie “protection” fees and without payment of that fee, they claim authority to confiscate your animal or fine you.

screw them.

I have never paid a dime for a dog and I doubt I will ever pay more than maybe 40 bucks and that would only be for a puppy.

Not all shelters are affiliated with the Humane Society. Some shelters actually want to save dogs. Or at least save them from misery. Fees for dogs go toward food and vet bills.

My three current pups and my cat are all shelter animals. That's the way to go for me from now on. Don't buy from a pet store, EVER, and, frankly, don't buy from a breeder, either.

Why not settle for a good approximation of the breed you want from a shelter? Shelters also have a lot of surprisingly excellent examples of purebreds there, too, mainly because a lot of people unwisely think they have plenty of time for a dog, spend big bucks for a purebred, and then find they are not patient enough, or available enough, or they have to move, or whatever, and turn in a lovely dog for someone else to adopt. Get on petfinder.com, put in your zip code, and see many wonderful pets in shelters in your area. I didn't use to think that shelters had 'good' dogs in them, but boy was I wrong! Try petfinder and see what I mean.

And many of the mixed breeds are very attractive, loving, and intelligent dogs. I confess, I used to be something of a 'purebreed snob', but I was wrong.

I was in our local shelter just today to take in some old blankets that they use for beds for the big dogs, and a loving couple were taking home a sweet Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix that was absolutely darling! They were so happy with their new pet! Help out a dog in need. Adopt from a shelter. You won't be sorry.

I thought those were called “rescues” not shelters. I’ve heard of the places that are privately owned and accept donations. I’ve never actually seen one. But I know a lady that used to volunteer at one.

I lived in a rural area that had a shelter that served and was supported by the township. There was a volunteer organization that raised money to help families spay/neuter their pets. I suspect that city shelters are affiliated with the Humane Society.

They are and they are a scam, imo. I don’t know how they get away with being “non profit”.

I love mutts. Always have and always had one or two.

Sadly, the last two died of different types of cancer.

Dog food? Not sure, I always fed good food. Not the bottom, bargin basement stuff.

M last two were the best... I no longer believe that mutts are are “immune” thgan purebreds. Sad but true.

I don’t know much about them as my experience is with township shelters. You can still get a dog there for $20. I heard the Humane Society shelters want a LOT more.

In large cities, the humane society looks just like a pet store. There are name brand pet supplies to buy. Nothing there is cheap.

Confiscating peoples pets and charging them “protection” fees is big business.

Most large cities have now even made it against the law to even own a dog that has puppies. The humane society doesn’t want any competition.

Mutts are good dogs, in general. You usually don’t have to worry about the [genetic] problems of a purebred.

That's true. Everyone I know who has ever adopted a purebred ended up dealing with genetic issues. Mutts are more unpredictable as far as personality but are much healthier.

They said the kids had never managed to break her legs and the vet bills for the purebred were piling up. I told them to pound sand.

What sick people. I'm glad you told them where to go.

Both parents had good temperaments and he hasn't shown the slightest bit of aggression at two years old. My last dog was a Cane Corso Mastiff which is a large breed that can be a handful. I just put him down at 11 years old because of health reasons, he was the best dog I ever owned by far. I didn't get another one because I didn't like the fact that the breeds popularity exploded and there were too many bad breeders.

I hope you have a section on parvovirus.

Proper behavior to keep your puppy safe is counterintuitive.

Everything you want to do with a new puppy, such as taking them to Petsmart, out to the park, etc., you shouldn’t do until your puppy has been weaned for long enough and gone through the proper number of immunizations that your vet deems proper.

(In a nutshell, the puppy’s immune system has immunity from its mother’s milk, and this interferes with the initial vaccination from fully protecting the puppy from parvovirus.)

Our late beloved border collie had two litters (ABCA registered), and we gave each purchaser a six page single-spaced set of instructions on puppy care. And went over it with ‘em, too.

Hats off to you. I know the Cane. I ran a Bullmastiff kennel for 20 years.

I've got my last old brindle sire living here now. He's like living with an old blues man parolee - always on the edge of some hilarious behavior. I put a blues song on and he starts moanin' and woofin'. Gets skunked about twice a week during the summer. I think he owns stock in the tomato juice company. I think he made love to a porcupine one night - got every quill from the tip of his tail to the bottom of his throat.

THIS THREAD IS USELESS WITHOUT PICS!

I say, skip the puppy and get an adult dog. You won't have to worry about puppy shots, teething, neutering, housetraining, etc. Let someone else get their shoes/furniture/house ripped into pieces.

Most people get fed up and turn them into the shelter at 1 yr, right when they're finally starting to outgrow that obnoxious 'teenager' stage.

We got the big one at the Humane Society and the little one at the city pound, and they were both worth every penny.

I felt badly that the purebred couldn’t be saved from them too.
