Do We Restrict Peanuts Because 100 People a Year Die from Allergy?
Publius' Forum ^ | 4/07/09 | Warner Todd Huston

Here is the nanny state at its most ridiculous. Healthies -- people that obsess about health -- are on the march in Madison, Wisconsin trying to get the state government to ban people from feeding peanuts to squirrels on the state Capitol grounds. It's a state emergency, ya know? Why these casually discarded peanuts could just maybe affect a child that has an allergy. We MUST ban the evil peanut to SAVE THE CHILDREN!

One would think that people are dropping dead every 5 seconds from peanut allergies with all this energy and focus directed against that monstrous Mr. Peanut. You would think that this important health effort would save uncounted lives, wouldn't you?

Maybe not...

May as well restrict cars, water and food altogether because thousands of people a year die from them...gee wiz!

It would make more sense to ban bread in the employee cafeteria.

I am DEATHLY allergic to peanuts. I have been rushed to the hospital on several occasions due to eating food cooked in peanut oil or not knowing something had peanuts in it. I THINK THIS IS RIDICULOUS! Just because some have a reaction to it doesn’t mean others can’t enjoy it. Don’t these freaking people have anything better to do with their lives?

We would likely be better off if the people with such allergies take care of themselves by steering clear of peanuts and peanut products and by carrying an epi-pen.

If we used the "logic" of the pro-abortion/euthanasia/eugenics crowd, i.e., the Democrats, we would mandate those individuals eat peanuts to eliminate their bad genes from the gene pool as fast as possible.

Sure, Americans do die yearly from complications of peanut allergies but at a rate of 100 or so a year, the absurd hyperbolic action being sought by the state government in Wisconsin is just plain silly.

The same can be said for rare hamburgers. One kid dies in Utah someplace supposedly because he had hamburger meat that was "undercooked" and now half the places where I might order a hamburger will not prepare one for me the way I want them to prepare it.

I worked with a guy when I was in the Navy that wanted his hamburger raw. I mean raw, as in uncooked.
The mess cooks wouldn't give it to him raw. Said they had to cook it a little.

He asked them if there was a standard on how long it had to be cooked.
They said no, there was no standard.

He told them throw it on the grill for 1 second, turn it over and leave it for 1 second, and give it to him.

Everyone was happy.

My mother used to make "steak tartare" for my father every Thursday night. Raw hamburger, raw egg yoke, raw onion, raw anchovies, on a slice of toasted rye bread.

It could be that a child with an allergy to peanuts would wander onto the square unaware that the squirrels are being fed peanuts.

I guess it isn't important unless you're the parent of a child who has the allergy---and that would change your opinion PDQ.

My cousin had a child with the allergy --first time I ever heard of it--and it was horrible--because peanuts are in many things that kids eat. And it is life-threatening at times.

I have friends who have a new two-month-old who has been diagnosed with a metabolism disorder that will require medication and diet all her life. I told the parents that it could be worse--she could be allergic to peanuts. They agreed.

Never. These dunces have nothing to do so they dream up causes to look important. We could cut the all Government by at least half if not more and be better off.
