I’m sorry to say this on FR about some of the people on FR but, I don’t think you’ll get civilized discussion.
Really? Any time a woman stands up for "equal treatment"? Doubt it.
I don't ask for equal treatment. I already have it. Why ask for something you already have? I can give as well as take from people here.
Conservatives can't stand language Nazis.
George Orwell wrote a famous essay about them.
Yeah, well it’s started already. It’ll only get worse when I ping some of those involved. I’d really like to see a post from a woman who stood up for women’s rights on FR without being bashed.
By the way, I agree with most of your points, but I think your statement about FR is a gross overgeneralization.
One thing to keep in mind around here is that you’ve gotta have something of a thick skin, and whining about the use of a word like reporterette will just bring out the fight in some posters. I don’t think it has anything much to do with sexism per se (whether or not the word is appropriate); I think people just tend to react negatively to people hectoring them about the words they use.
Agreed. But I still think people are entitled to an opinion.
I have been around FR for a number of years now. I honestly don’t see this as a problem. I’ve never been called a feminazi. I’ve never been called a chauvinist either. In fact, when a poster responds to an issue, unless that person identifies their sex, it never enters into the discussion.
I think you are full of sh** an a troll to boot. IMO.
I think you are exaggerating a touch. ALL the time? Really?
Not everyone gets along here. Who knows if it’s just a personal thing between a couple of people who just don’t like each other. People have the right not to get along and say so. If it gets out of line the admin mods step in. Lord knows they do it often enough.
Honest question: what does nagging someone about a word they use have to do with women's rights? I doubt anyone around here thinks the reporter in question shouldn't be allowed to do that job, and Freepers (myself included) were and are strong supporters of Sarah Palin for VP and possibly President.
Equal rights have nothing to do with this, I think, though I admit I haven't read the exchange on the other thread, so some may have crossed that line. But using the word "reporterette" and then being annoyed at the PC Word Police has very little to do with equal rights.
The world is mad, and there IS a devil behind every tree.
And some people love to see/hear themselves talk.
It's a psychological hodgepodge in desperate need of a leader, without which we fire on each other.
Get over it, the time for delicacies is past.
Were anyone's posts removed? Everyone is entitled to an opinion; nobody is entitled to post their opinion without allowing opposition. Sometimes that opposition is friendly, sometimes it's rude, sometimes it's a bit hostile, but those posters have a right to post their thoughts as well. Nobody has a right not to have their feelings hurt.
Malkee, sorry you had this experience. I’ve been here several years now and have never seen a female dissed for any reason. I’ve seen some severe disagreements, but they have been issue based, not gender based.
McCain wasn't there for her because he's a RINO and Sarah's a conservative, not because she's a woman. You'll have to come up with a much better example than that if you aim to show that GOP in general mistreats women.
I've been around here just slightly longer than the 5 months since you signed-up, and I find your question/statement to be a gross exaggeration and a broad brush that simply isn't true. You've gotten your feelings hurt needlessly. Suck it up and move on like a big girl.
Yeah, but [at least in theory] people are also [supposed to be] entitled to speak freely without having to worry about a bunch of Language Nazis trying to tell them what are and are not acceptable choices in vocabulary.
Well, speaking only for myself, I find those kind of wordings to be somewhat juvenile. Reporter does the job so why use ‘reporterette’? It smacks of PC nonsense. What do you use if you have no idea if the reporterette/reporter is a man or a woman?
I am an agnostic, but find it just as juvenile when people use CE (Common Era) in place of AD (Anno Domini).
Stuff like that just puts my teeth on edge.
Well said. I think you’re overgeneralizing some ... but basically you called it right.
But there’s a bigger issue at stake. Conservatives have to concentrate on the core BIG issues: personal responsibility, pro-life and the Constitution ... and stop being so petty and catty and boorish about the little things (leave that to the liberals).
