The use of the "V-word" continues to be used in the most "enlightened" places. Today, it is an interview with health author Jane Brody in the NYT about her new book on planning for death. From the interview:
Q: When is the right time to start planning for death?Terri Schiavo was not a carrot or a turnip. She was a human being with a profound cognitive disability. Calling her a "V" demeans her and dehumanizes her moral worth as a human being--just as the odious "N-word" does people with dark skin. It should never be used among enlightened people. Indeed, we need to grow as a culture so that anyone using it is treated with the same disdain by polite society as we do now to anyone who uses the crude "N" epithet.
A: Start thinking about it when it's unlikely to happen any time soon. It's much easier to do it then. It's less painful. Get it out of the way. Many people are saying, "I'm going to take action now while I still feel good and I'm still healthy." You don't have to be old. If you recall, Terri Schiavo was 26 when she suffered a heart attack that deprived her brain of oxygen and left her a living vegetable for 15 years, at great cost and trauma to her family.
Terri's family loved her and wanted to take care of her, the trauma came when Terri's adulterous "husband" decided to murder her.

The most amazing part of the whole story to me is that cowards are allowed to pretend they aren’t killing her, by killing her in a most painful and horrific manner.
If you put a dog to death in that way, many of the same people would call for a rope.
No matter what the issue is, I can never support the Word Police.
Exactly.
The MOST BASIC HUMAN NEEDS are oxygen, water and nutrition. ANY person who is deprived of even one of these WILL DIE, Terri was denied two.
This was either MURDER or an EXECUTION. However, to be executed a person MUST be convicted by a jury and this WAS NOT done, so it can only be murder.
If we are going to kill those who don’t meet our criteria as fully human, the least we should expect of ourselves is to have the cojones to do it as humanely as possible.
Judges including Greer, Whittemore, Baird and the appeals courts all delighted in having the power to kill a human being. Someday, the truth will be known to all. I don’t expect any tell all books from the killers but there will be total exposure before the next decade by an insider.
Funny that a simple heart attack could cause so many injuries and broken bones.
Her “husband” and that creep Felix whats-his-name from the hospice where Terry was imprisoned.
That is why the complicit media went to such great lengths to describe dehydration as “euphoric” and “beautiful”.
Less than a week later, the same media was berating people for standing in line for up to 24 hours to view the body of Pope John Paul II, the media was saying that people risked dehydration.
I think that all three were in play - dear hubby grabbed her by the throat, pounded her head against the wall, bashing her brain around, and then squeezed until she was gurgling on the floor struggling for breath. Or maybe people would rather believe Michael: “I found her on floor...don’t know what happened...”
20 years later the execution was complete.
She had major broken bones. IMO, she was bopped from behind, HINO waited before he called Bobby Schindler who also lived in the complex. IMO, HINO was hoping she'd die but oops, she didn't die after the whack to the head from behind. So, HINO got connected to people who would help him finish the job. He was a dedicated sociopath and it almost goes without saying that money is the root of all evil.
Death lawyer George Felos. creepy creep.
Yes, thanks for all your work and vigil at the hospice.
And Mikey failed to perform CPR even though he was trained to.
Also, there is direct testimony from Terri's brother and best friend that she was planning to leave Mikey because of abuse and she had had these conversations as recently as the afternoon before her injury.
And do not forget that Mikey hired an attorney within 48 hours of Terri's injury which would lead a reasonable person to conclude that he was afraid of what would happen if she recovered.
Hardest project I ever took on as did millions from around the world. 2003 was rewarding. 2005 was simply heinous.
I hope so.
I hate the word “vegetable” used for a human being, no matter what their condition.
