Rush Pushes, Steele Bends

Posted by Anthony Sacramone on March 3, 2009

Rush Limbaugh 1, RNC Chairman Michael Steele 0.

Just who is running the Republican Party?

“There was no attempt on my part to diminish [Limbaugh's] voice or his leadership,” Steele said. He added, “There are those out there who want to look at what he’s saying as incendiary and divisive and ugly. That’s what I was trying to say. It didn’t come out that way.”

1. His leadership? He’s a talk-radio host. No matter how successful his schtick, Limbaugh wasn’t elected to anything.

2. No, you said he was all those things in an effort to assert your leadership. Look, he’s supposed to be bombastic and incendiary. Throwing rhetorical bombs is how he — and a slew of others — get ratings. If you thought his act was inappropriate for CPAC, why didn’t you voice objections before the event, either privately to CPAC organizers or publicly, to put everyone on notice that you were taking the party in a different direction?

You want Rush to be the party pit bull, rallying the troops for a fight and leaving nuance and deep policy thoughts to others? Fine. You want the public to picture someone other than Rush Limbaugh when they think “Republican Party”? You think he’s a Reagan-era blowhard? You want to elevate the rhetoric and engage in more sophisticated policy debates? Then don’t apologize.

But pick a stance and stand firm.

I can just see all those Republicans and Reagan Dems who voted for Obama last year running back to the other side of the aisle in light of this high-school stuff. Somebody put out three more chairs …

Another NNNN (no-name numbnut) weighs in with his column-writing requirement for today. This little kerfuffle has been handled. Everyone’s over it except the the second and third strings of media writers.

Sacramone is a putz? Why, because he suckered you in despite the fact that “everyone’s over it....”?

Well, I realize that to each his own. Sacramone’s social satire doesn’t strike a cord with all.

I wasn’t the one who said everyone was over it. Personally, I think Steele has more coming. And deserves it. He’s shown he’s a lilly-livered rino afraid of offending the left.

I agree with you.Maybe RUSH could take the job as head of RNC from the southern command and run it by video link.

Begging your pardon. I mistakenly quoted Attention Surplus Disorder.

Yes, Steele is a Rino.

Steele was simply stupid in not providing a simple assessment of Rush: "He's an entertainer not an elected official, while he is often right I also have had disagreements with him on some issues, Republicans can not be expected to publicly offer line-item agreements or condemnations for a talk show host who makes dozens of comments during every three hour show."

This isn't rocket science.

I don’t see why not, after all he’s got half his brain in reserve...

Anyone who listens to Rush has heard virtually everything he said at CPAC. They knew what they were getting, that’s why they invited him to speak. Steele just didn’t man up afterward and stand by it. And he paid the price.

“Steele was simply stupid...”

I disagree. He’s not that stupid. “Incendiary” was his word. Furthermore, when you read it in context, Steele meant exactly what he said. The only reason he’s singin’ a different tune now is because conservatives are on the verge of throwing tea in the harbor. We’ve had enough BS, especially from RINO’s. And when the Chattering Class starts attacking our voice in the public square, something’s going to hit the fan.
