Will the Real Michael Steele Please Stand Up (or sit down and shut up)
Gordon Greene | March 3, 2009 | Gordon Greene

I read the post, located here - Steele to Rush: I'm Sorry and had to see exactly what Steele said in context. Here's the transcript...

HUGHLEY: You know what we do, we talk like we’re talking now. You have your view. I have mine. We don’t need incendiary rhetoric.

STEELE: Exactly.

HUGHLEY: Like Rush Limbaugh, who is the de facto leader of the Republican Party.

STEELE: No, he’s not.

HUGHLEY: I will tell you what …

STEELE: I’m the de facto leader of the Republican Party.

HUGHLEY: You know what? I can appreciate that. But no one will actually decry down some of the things he says. Like when he comes out and says he wants the president to fail. I understand he wants liberalism to fail. Like, I get it’s not about the man. But it is still about the idea that he would rather have an idea fail so his idea can move to the forefront. And that would succeed. And that to me is destructive.

STEELE: How is that any different than what was said about George Bush during his presidency?

HUGHLEY: You’re absolutely — let me say something. You’re absolutely right.

STEELE: So let’s put it into context here. Let’s put it into context here. Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer. Rush Limbaugh, his whole thing is entertainment. Yes, it’s incendiary. Yes, it’s ugly.

HUGHLEY: He influences the party. And I tell you what, you’re the first Republican I have talked to, and I have talked to a lot, to say he’s not the leader of his party. I have never heard anybody say that on any show.

Steele went on to apologize (sort of) today and stated that he did not say what he meant; that he was "maybe a little bit inarticulate." If Michael Steele is in fact so inarticulate that he is not able to adequately convey his thoughts to that extent, then he is in no way capable of representing the Republican party.

How is this different than, "it depends on what the meaning of 'is' is"?

I want Michael Steele to succeed, but I'm with Rush. After the last Bush election Rush said he was no longer going to carry water for the Republicans when he disagreed with them. If we are going to succeed as a conservative party we are going to have to hold our own accountable. If we don't we might as well go to the house.

Or did we learn nothing from John McCain???

LOL

Or as Gov. Wallace might have said, “We are trying to out MagicNegro the Democrats”.

We got Jindel because he is a person of color and Palin because she is a woman. If they were both white men, their chances of being in the limelight would have been much less.

Maybe we should appoint Mr. Ed to a GOP leadership position.

He’s close to being an ass so he could get the democrat vote and fills the bill of a conservative as an intelligent palomino American Saddlebred.

Maybe Oliver North will stop following the Marines around the battlefields and come run for President. Who else is out there ?

Because when they do the right thing we should have the moral fortitude to say so it makes our criticism that much more listenable than to criticize even when they do the right thing.

Crap!

Well, at least Obama has gained some ground. Must be the wife’s prize winning bare arms. What a looker! (Honestly, typing that made me a little sick at my stomach. I’m going to lay down for a bit).

If what he did today makes Obama, Frank and Dodd squirm — or better yet — actually turns over a rock that is propping up Obama I think it’s a good thing...

“Because when they do the right thing we should have the moral fortitude to say so it makes our criticism that much more listenable than to criticize even when they do the right thing.”

You’re right... I must agree. My point to hold them accountable would be useless without that fact.

The only problem is that I’m used to doing that with my children. I feel kind of funny patting a seasoned war-vet on the back because he occasionally pees in the toilet instead of on the lid. My mother made sure I understood she wasn’t going to give me props for doing what was expected of me in the first place, but we do have to show consistency in our thought process.

I was just checking in on the Politico comments on this story... has the Politico been totally taken over by libs? I’ve seen comments on here about it but I had no idea it had gotten that bad over there.

Makes me even more proud this site is as strict as it is...

**Too little too late.**

Well, McLame Has taught me a few things.. any repub with less than an 85 per ACU will not even be LOOKED at if they run for ANYTHING. If they vote 100% pro life and 100% NRA but rate an 80 per ACU ... forget it.

The GOP has learned NOTHING from the last election. If the “Holdyernosers” had stayed home, McLame and the GOP would have received a MONDALE style Trouncing.. maybe THAT would have taught the GOP what happens when you move to the LEFT.. they haven’t learned

YET!!

I don't have a problem with what he says--even the "ugly" part because yeah, it gets ugly when you're saying things like you want the president to fail*--but the Nazi thing?

Steele has to be told he's the head of the party. He should be out front and definite. He came off as if he were honored to be allowed on the same set as D. L. Hughley. I mean..D.L. Hughley?? Who the heck is HE that anyone has to try to impress him?

On the other hand, he did apologize, and he IS new on the scene. I'm not cutting him any slack, but I am understanding the situation. He needs to man up and assert himself and push an agenda, not be so damned compliant with "celebrities" or celebrity journalists.

*I agree with his position, but yeah, it's an ugly truth.
