U.S. pipeline group cranks up operations in TransCanada's turf

CALGARY -- The U.S. pipeline group competing against TransCanada Corp. to build the Alaska natural-gas pipeline is cranking up operations in its rival's backyard, with plans to start field work here this winter, expanding its staff and recently opening its own office in Calgary.

"We're starting field work [in Canada] this winter," said Bob Bleaney, Denali Canada's general manager, integration. "It hasn't started yet, but the planning work is underway here in the offices. The groundwork will commence a little later on this winter."

Further, Denali, which is owned by BP PLC and ConocoPhillips Inc., has also hired Daniel Ouimet away from Bennett Jones LLP, where he was the Calgary law firm's business development director, to handle external relations. He joined Denali last week and will take care of its dealings with Ottawa, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon.

Blueprints for the 2,760-kilometre-long pipeline have been kicking around for 30 years, with little progress. The race to build the pipeline, which would ferry gas from Alaska's North Slope to the lower 48 states, was jump-started last summer when Sarah Palin, the state's Governor, pushed through the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act.

Alaska crowned TransCanada as the AGIA-licensee, giving it a package of financial goodies to be used in the preliminary phases of the project.

Denali did not participate in Ms. Palin's AGIA process. But its presence in Canada demonstrates its commitment to challenging TransCanada.

There, I press-ified it.

They are terrified of her. Let the Establishment media try to make this stick. We will expose the lies and so will she. She should hammer them on this.

Brought it to CBS standard.
