Free Speech? For How Long?
Conservative Thoughts ^ | 2/15/2009 | John Kuethe

Posted on 02/15/2009 4:09:36 PM PST by Wrangler22

As someone who blogs on the goings on in the American political arena I avail myself of the right to free speech on a regular basis. Therefore, I find it unsettling when I hear the increased volume of the push for the so called “Fairness Doctrine” from the Left. They are using the momentum of Omaba’s election as a vehicle to try and silence the voices of talk radio giants like Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingraham, Hewitt, and Savage. The battle lines have been drawn and it is just a matter of time before the fight for the airwaves ensues.

As a regular listener of talk radio I believe that these people have the right to fight for air space in the free market. The Left has had ample opportunity via Air America and NPR to draw audiences to Liberal radio with little or no success. It is apparent that liberals are not attracted to talk radio; perhaps it is because they have the mainstream media, Hollywood movie makers, and assorted bath houses in which to express their views.

I have no doubts that the giants of conservative talk radio will have the ammunition to fight for their right to speak should it come to that and satellite radio has been a viable option for people looking to escape the FCC, just ask Howard Stern. Wouldn’t it be ironic to see Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage seek refuge in the same venue as a Howard Stern?

The question I have hits a little closer to home. As president Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Reid mold this nation into their vision of a socialist utopia, where will conservative bloggers fit in; if they are allowed to fit in at all? Blogging has grown to become a major sector in the political arena and as the Left seeks to silence conservative talk radio, is it not logical to fear that they will also seek to silence conservative blogs as well? Is the Left’s interpretation of the constitution as a living, breathing document that evolves with society not a platform from which they can launch a campaign to re-define free speech?

The double standard is nothing new to the Left, it is a part of the very fabric of their being. Most of us can recall the shrill voice of Hillary Clinton proclaiming that it is this people’s right to question the Bush administration; will the same hold true for those who feel compelled to question the Obama administration? These are the questions that conservatives should be asking themselves. As the Left moves at warp speed to impose socialized medicine, socialized banking, socialized business and restrain conservative talk radio, it is just a matter of time until they try to shut down conservative blogs. Just look at the history of socialist and Marxist governments, suppressing free speech is one of the foundations of controlling dissent.

It’s kind of strange to me that these liberals are all against “censorship” when the subject is explicit content in movies and TV. But they want to censor Rush Limbaugh and talk radio.

What’s the matter with liberals? Are they in favor of free speech or not? Don’t they have the courage of their convictions to get out there and persuade us that liberalism is the answer to our problems? Don’t they have the ability to articulate liberal values, lack of moral judgements, tolerance, etc.???????

Are they really so afraid of Rush Limbaugh that they want him silenced? Are they really so afraid of Sarah Palin that they are working even now to marginalize her and turn her into a cocktail party joke?

Bottom line to me is, do the liberals have the ability to compete in the political arena of ideas and agendas, and persuading voters that they have solutions? If they don’t have the ability to persuade voters, and compete in the arena of free speech, what does that say about their ideology? If they are that afraid of what Rush Limbaugh is going to say about them, where is the courage of their own convictions?

I just got an IPHONE yesterday and I have to say I LOVE IT. It’s even better than I thought it would be. But here’s what I want to say...if you go to political news PODCASTS to download, there is not one conservative show on the roster. If there’s going to be “fairness” it has to be all around....

Not only talk radio, but ALL OF US. Hate speech, the government making determinations on WHAT IS RIGHT, WHAT IS CORRECT, WHAT CAN BE SAID AND WHAT CANNOT BE SAID. That if you disagree with the government party line, YOU ARE WRONG, and you are guilty of some crime they will write. STAY ARMED FOLKS, because too get back all the liberty we are losing, it will take an invasion of Sodom on the Potomac to get it back.

If the failure at Air Americ is any indication, they can’t compete in the arena of ideas. The only way they can compete is to silence the opposition.

The same goes for iPods. Apple is a liberal company, but they manufacture a high quality product anyway.

You do know that the inspiration for "Love Story", instigator of the Internet and the real winner of the 2000 Presidential Election IS ON APPLE's Board of Directors, don't you? That being said, I can get Town Hall and Dennis Praeger and others as podcasts on my iTunes on my Mac.

“Politico.com - President Clinton Wants ‘More Balance’ on Airwaves

February 12, 2009
By Michael Calderone, Politico.com

Even though no member of Congress has scheduled hearings on the Fairness Doctrine, it remains on a hot topic on both liberal and conservative shows.

Today, radio host Mario Solis Marich asked former President Bill Clinton if it was time for “some type of enforced media accountability.”

“Well, you either ought to have the Fairness Doctrine or we ought to have more balance on the other side,” Clinton said, “because essentially there’s always been a lot of big money to support the right wing talk shows and let face it, you know, Rush Limbaugh is fairly entertaining even when he is saying things that I think are ridiculous....”

Clinton said that there needs to be either “more balance in the programs or have some opportunity for people to offer countervailing opinions.” Clinton added that he didn’t support repealing the Fairness Doctrine, an act done under Reagan’s FCC.

In the past week, a couple Democratic Senators, Debbie Stabenow and Tom Harkin, have both spoken favorably about the Fairness Doctrine, or holding hearings on radio accountability.”

I think that getting podcasts is a mixed bag depending on the broadcaster. Rush and others reserve that right to ‘Premium Members’. I am trying to remember how I got Dennis Praeger and Town Hall and think that the instructions are on their websites.
