DeMint unveils alternative to Obama stimulus [is joined by Sanford] [The American Option]

U.S. Rep. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., today released a jobs plan he said would stimulate the economy with tax cuts and would create 18 million new jobs over 10 years and 7,000 S.C. jobs this year.

DeMint has been one of the Congress' most vocal opponents of the stimulus bill making its way through U.S. Senate that includes possibly a $1 trillion in new spending and tax cuts.

DeMint, who was joined in Washington, D.C. by Gov. Mark Sanford, another high-profile critic of the stimulus package, said tax cuts are a more responsible way to spark the nation's economy.

"We think Jim is on the right track with this plan," Sanford said in a statement. "If the goal is to stimulate the economy now, we need to do it with direct and permanent tax cuts rather than massive spending increases that drip into the economy over ten years' time. If a stimulus plan is indeed inevitable, we're hopeful that the Senate will move in this direction and away from what's currently contemplated."

Have you read DeMint's proposal? It's so loaded with tax cuts and tax repeals, on a permanent and across-the-board basis, that it's not funny at all.

>> South Carolina. Leading the way once again.

Clearly you’re not talking about that poofter Lindsey Grahamnesty. I’d disown that one if I were you.

But, good on y’all for growing Senator DeMint. He’s not only a conservative, he’s not ashamed of conservatism!

(Are you listening, Sen. McCain? And so many others?)

I’m going back to December, 1860, when South Carolina decalred it’s independence from the tyranny of the Federal Government, the first state to do so.

(Although, SC had to be dragged kicking and screaming into signing the Declaration of Indepence. And there is the Lindsey thing. But no state is perfect. Not even my home state of TX.)

Sounds like Duncan Hunter’s plan when Bush/Pelosi/Reid/McCain/Paulson and the entire GOP “leadership” was pushing the first $850 billion POS boondoggle.

Once again, I’m proud of my Senator — and that Gov. Sanford was present gives me some reassurance about his philosophy and abilities to govern.

I note that Lindsey wasn’t present...Did I miss him? If he was there I’d be SHOCKED, if he wasn’t, I would suspect he was huddling with John McCain and the other members of his bipartisan “Gang of 14.”

Hey, I voted against Lindsey — he won anyway. And you can bet when Jim DeMint runs in a couple of years, he is going to be Senate target #1 — of Democrats AND RINO’s. I’m glad to see someone back in the senate with a backbone and some principles like the late Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC).

FYI:

Sanford and DeMint said they are joining forces in a bid to try to spark the kind of national outcry among conservatives that led to the defeat of a major Senate immigration-reform bill in 2007.

Apparently somebody got Lindsey to show up at DeMint's and Sanford's press conference. See the article linked at post 13. [Note that he is still working with McCain.]

Cutting taxes while going on a government spending orgy (see George W. Bush) is what got us into this mess in the first place. If you don't massively decease the size of government and reign in spending while you decide to load "tax cuts and tax repeals, on a permanent and across-the-board basis" into the federal budget, you're going to get a huge deficit and have to borrow money for generations to pay it back.

Does the DeMint/Sanford/Graham (yes, the eeeeeeeeeeeevil Lindsey is on board for this one) plan include proposals to downsize and slash the cost of government during their massive tax cuts? If not then I don't support the "alternate stimulus plan" and the poster is right -- we don't need any "stimulus". We need to keep the government out of it and let the free market sort itself out.
