Federal gas tax to increase $2.40/gallon?

If New York Times columnist Friedman has his way, gas taxes will go up. Way up. He wants to slap an additional $2.40 per gallon in taxes on top of the 18.4¢ you already pay.

“Today’s financial crisis is Obama’s 9/11,” Friedman wrote. “The public is ready to be mobilized. Obama is coming in with enormous popularity. This is his window of opportunity to impose a gas tax. And he could make it painless: offset the gas tax by lowering payroll taxes, or phase it in over two years at 10 cents a month.”

Do the math. 10 cents a month for two years. That’s an additional $2.40 per gallon...

He’d more likely either starve to death or be killed in the “food riots” ... How long would New York last with the trucking and rail industries destroyed?

Would we have to stop with just mass protests? Could we not ramp it up a notch and get rid of some liberalpolitical dead wood?

Fixed.

Now I'm confused, this article says Shell did have a loss.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/business/6244756.html

Shell's statement seems to say differently.

Any accountants here want to interpret Shell's results?

While this tax boost is not very likely, gasoline prices will be driven up by carbon taxes, windfall profits taxes on oil companies and the lack of US production that will reduce supplies. $4 per gallon gasoline is almost a certainty before the end of Obama’s first term.

Well, one thing we know,

democRats will figure out a way that THEY won’t have to pay this tax.
********************************************************
The RATS in NYC love the gas tax because...

1.) The mafia runs the gas stations and they simply pocket what should be collected in taxes..

2.) New York gets far more from the fed gov’t in subsidies for roadbuilding and cash injections into mass transit than they pay in ... a subway ride would be $9 or so instead of $2.50 if you and me weren’t getting fleeced for their behalf.

Is Friedman nuts? Even President Obama wouldn’t be dumb enough to slap on such a ridiculous tax immediately—he would end up facing a Republican majority in both houses of Congress come January 2011 if that happens!
