Thursday (01.29.09) I traveled up I-55 through Arkansas and Missouri on the heels of a rather nasty winter storm. From just north of Blytheville, AR to a bit north of Charleston, MO the storm dropped an unbelievable amount of ice. The results were devastating. Thousands of people without power and significant damage to homes, trees and power lines.
Being the shutterbug that I am, I grabbed my digital camera to get images for my blog. But the batteries were dead. And since no one had power and all the stores were closed, I could not get any batteries. So, I was reduced to walking around in the cold snapping low-resolution pics in bad light with my cell phone. Most of them came out too crappy to use here, but I've managed to salvage a few. Most of these were shot at or near the Pilot Travel Center in Hayti, MO. A few others were shot north of Hayti after I hit the road again.

Make a nice Christmas Card you could send to Algore.
So this Bambi’s Katrina. How’s he handling it? Where’s the press on all this? There are a million Americans shivering in the dark. Where’s the outrage?
Those poor people and motorists. Prayers that everyone is staying warm and safe.
That tree felled by the ice reminds me of my poor birch tree when ice storm hit my area in ‘96. Before the storm, my birch tree was rather stately looking. During the storm, it looked like that poor tree with ice on all limbs. Thankfully, the tree didn’t go into the street but it sure needed trimming after the storm lifted. The pics brought back all the bad memories including a week without power.
Well, all that heat from the green house gasses is rising, leaving the cold down here on the surface, sending us into another ice age. It’s the heat that’s making us cold.
It’s called a “thermostatic-cooling effect.”
Right?.... Hello? Mr. Gore?... Right? :p
I have seen no reporting on this. Nor has Bambi mentioned these folks or scheduled a fly over.
Perhaps Bambi chided them for cancelling school- they NEVER cancel school in Chicago!
I couldn’t help thinking back to Katrina (I live in south MS). Similar damage to trees and power lines. The lo-res cell phone images really don’t do it justice - next time I’ll have batteries in my camera.
They have schools in Chicago?
No batteries or way to charge your camera but can post on the internet???????????????
Any way, cool pics!
“Make a nice Christmas Card you could send to Algore.”
<<<LOL! Algore is such a fraud as is the whole movement....live in Chicago where it seems to snow daily and has been one of the coldest winters (# cold days, etc). Everyday, I remember to tell someone that I am sick and tired of global warming. :)
Great pics—explains why MO State Univ. in Springfield was closed!
Were you anywhere close to Springfield or Bolivar?
Surreal and frightening. Prayer heavenward for everyone’s safety. <><
Not near Springfield. I was coming up I-55 - Memphis - Blytheville, St Louis, then up US 61 thru Hannibal.
However, the worst part came in the Spring, when the meltoff from the mountains caused swollen streams, and the Willamette River threatened to flood downtown Ptlnd (not necessarily a completely bad idea, lol.)

Took the pics w/my cell phone. Then msg’d the pics from phone to my e-mail acct. Then used my AT&T wireless USB device to get on the Internet w/my laptop, grab the pics from my e-mail and upload them to my blog.
God, I love all my gadgets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
