For once, I can agree with Obama.
I'm from Chicago, too, and the 6 or 7 winters I have spent here in the D.C. area, I have been amazed at how a little bit of snow or ice shuts this place down.
But doesn't that make me and Obama statists or climatists or some other -ists? We just don't understand.
We just don't understand what it's like to grow up in an area that doesn't have the great abundance of plows and road salt like they do in upstate Illinois.
We just don't understand the barriers that people of this region have had to overcome in getting a sufficient education to make their way along a snowy or icy roadway.
We just don't understand how hard it is to pull one's self out of a ditch when they were unable to successfully navigate a treacherous back street.
We just don't understand how they've suffered the absence of role models who can steer them in the right direction when their rear wheels start fish-tailing in the slush.
Only when a D.C.-area driver wins the Indy 500 in a snowstorm will the real healing begin.
DC drivers aren’t wimp, they are just bad drivers. When I see a DC or Maryland license plate I reach for my insurance card.
DC keeps the same amount of ice and snow removal gear on hand as Chicago? Gee, who knew?

And it’s kinda hard to plow and salt/sand if there’s unrestricted on-street parking. Does DC have special parking rules in place to enact for snow and ice storms?

When the roads are cleared of snow and ice and treated so the surfaces don’t refreeze then I’ll agree with you.
Until then, it’s safer to keep kids in school buses off the roads. In freezing icy weather it’s better to have the children at home rather than waiting on street corners for buses that may or may not arrive.
If O objects to having his children home that’s his problem.
I for one, loved snow days. We got to do some neat stuff with our kids on an unexpected day off from school.
I thought he sounded petulant and whiney, as usual, and I thought he had no business publicly criticizing a safety policy of a school. If he had a problem with it, he should have called them personally.
I grew up in the upper Midwest but now live near DC. The schools were right to close today for several reasons including:
1. Tens of thousands of students do not own winter boots, an unneeded expense when children grow quickly and it seldom snows.
2. Sidewalks are not shoveled so these children would end up walking on the roads.
3. This was a snow, then ice, then rain, storm, which is tricky for many southern and foreign drivers to handle.
4. About five snow/hurricane/whatever days are built into the schedule to facilitate closure in dicey conditions.
5. There are an unbelievable number of lawyers around here, most of them eager to sue at the drop of a hat - or whenever anyone slips and falls on the ice.
Here in Upstate NY 6-10 inches of snow is "snow big deal". People still get into work OK. If DC commuters tried to drive in half an inch you would see 30 car pile ups.

Besides which, kids who attend private school in DC could very well live in farflung parts of MD and VA. My son goes to Gonzaga in DC, it was called off today [we live near Vienna in VA]. They go by Montgomery Co. Most of the private schools go by the policy of one of the surrounding counties, like fairfax or montgomery co, because it’s not like a neighborhood school where they all live near the school.
One person has already died in a DC car accident, attributed to the weather. The Messiah’s foot has met his mouth.

All are true. In Chicago (the city proper esp’ly) we do not have winding and sloping backroads that buses have to make their way upon.
But sometimes school has been cancelled here when a few inches of snow was *predicted* in the afternoon, and then didn’t happen.
But buses and school issues aside — rain or snow, the drivers in this area are clueless.
And this was satire. Twas more a poke at knee-jerk P.C.-ness than anything.
Wonder if his children ever rode in a schoolbus.
And I just can’t imagine children complaining about a snow day, unless that is being home with Mama Omarosa is punishment.
