These foolish drops do something drown my manly spirit.
Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice
I had neither planned nor expected to cry.
If its true, as some maintain, that men who cry are pantywaists, then I stand condemned.
Not being one of those whose tear-production is either quick or voluminous, I was amazed at how many times, watching the all-day spectacle, I lost it.
And it wasnt just at the easy times like, say, during a sudden close-up of a tear-streaked elderly black face in the crowd, but also at moments that were just plain for the country.
Historic and historic moment and historic day were repeated mercilessly, but remained true. Only a zombie could fail to feel the truth of it.

It seems, doesnt it, that there are two kinds of tears?
Theres the kind produced by the death of your dog (which just happened to me once again, and about which I always offend someone by asserting that the reason the death of a pet is worse than the death of a human is that you have mixed feelings about all people), or by the loss of a loved one. And theres the almost opposite kind but still tears produced by watching Astaire and Rogers, the young DiMaggio and the young Ali, a sudden Picasso, Ol Blue Eyess voice, the 23rd Psalm, or any performance by Meryl Streep. Or Obamas grin for his daughters.
Music bypasses the brain and goes straight to the heart. I wish my life had more of it. Once, years ago, I was taken along to Tanglewood for a concert by the great Zino Francescatti, a name scandalously unknown to me the day before.

That reminds me of what Groucho said about FDR-Dick Cavett
His inauguration made me cry too....and I didn’t even watch.
Remind me what that was...
Media creatures are after all actors.
I am completely taken aback! Shocked, shocked, I tell you. Who the Hell knew that Dick Cavett was still alive?
Hitler didn't have our MSM.
He would've been envious.
Yep, Obama won't even have to worry about building a Dachau, there's no need.
>His inauguration made me cry too....and I didnt even watch.
LOL - Good response.
If you know that Cavett has been clinically depressed off and on for years, you can see where he's coming from.
Obama is his Prozac, his electroshock, maybe even his Viagra.
Cavett was on the Turner Classic Movie channel a few nights ago.
They ran an hour long interview he did with Bette Davis around 1975 or so.
It was great!
I could only watch briefly. I couldn’t stand seeing Obama revel in being ‘historical,’ and lauded.
Maybe these media types have got this whole thing going with Obama where it's like wine snobbery - "No, it tastes better after it ages for a few days!" "No, no! It's better fresh!"
Us Anglo-Saxon peasant dogs just wouldn't understand.
It's enough to gag a maggot...
Cavett was always dropping Groucho’s name at any opportunity
and about any subject.
