Surprising pretty much everyone, NY Governor David Patterson is expected to announce today that he has selected upstate conservative Democrat Kirsten Gillibrand to fill the seat vacated by new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, infuriating the Dems who had been aggressively lobbying behind the scenes for the patronage peach.

Looks like the democrat answer to Sarah Palin.

Now, will the media savage her for her conservative positions? She does wear the “D” immunity badge.
Wow... Patterson actually picked someone who was qualified. Not bad.

In other words, she is a Democrat and not a Socialist.
She is no conservative Democrat. I don't know where that crap is coming from. She has a lifetime ACU rating of 8, National Right-to-Life Committee rating of 0, NARAL rating of 100, and voted with Grammy Nancy over 90% of the time in the last Congress. Even here in the PRNY, that's not a conservative Democrat.

These things are so predictable.
Apparently, Gov. Paterson wanted an upstater for the seat.
The official announcement is at noon Eastern today. (I wonder if Gov. Paterson will announce the date for the special election to fill Rep. Gillibrand's seat today also.)
Gillibrand has a pretty good rating from the NRA. Her colleague, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, who ran on a strict gun-control platform after her husband was murdered on the Long Island Railroad, has threatened to take Gillibrand on in a primary, assuming she's the pick.
Gillibrand is in an interesting position. She has to run in a special election in 2010 for the remainder of the term, then the seat is up in 2012. She'll be fundraising constantly for almost four years.
Conservative Democrat is like claiming to be the tallest midget in the circus.
It means she's only 90 percent liberal.
Zell Miller hasn’t been in office for 8 years or so. No one is suggesting that a conservative democrat in today’s democrat party would actually be a conservative by our definition of the term, any more than a “conservative” Swede would be. That being said, a quick look at the Dems up for the seat reveals her to be the most conservative among the choices.
It does shore up his position upstate, but his main opposition is Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, Mario's son, from Queens.
My guess is that Paterson will try to find a suburbanite -- Long Island or Westchester -- for Lt. Governor. Paterson, Schumer, and Cuomo 9and, I believe, Comptroller Arthur Levitt Jr.) are all from the city.
given her status with the NRA, i have no idea how schumer backed her.

but compare her to the other democrat wymyn serving in the O adminstration!
“more” conservative does not equal conservative.
So she may not be quite as loony as the other candidates.
She is still a pro-death lib.
She appears to be....Not Guilty.
