With President-elect Barack Obama set to take the oath of office to begin his first term, one New York Congressman wants to make it possible for him to one day serve a third. Representative Jose Serrano (D) has introduced a bill in the House to abolish the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, which limits presidents to two consecutive terms or ten years in office.
Until 1951, there was nothing preventing a president from seeing election for more than two terms. But all presidents prior to Franklin Delano Roosevelt honored a tradition begun by George Washington and served only two consecutive terms. Roosevelt stood for election for an unprecedented third term at the dawn of World War II and was elected to a fourth, only to die in office within months of his inauguration. He is the only American president to serve more than two terms.

Couldn’t they spell the name right?
I’ll be surprised if he lasts one term.
The left wants PERMANENT CONTROL and will do all that is possible to make it so!!
US liberals just want to follow in the footsteps of Chavez in Venezuela...after all, that model is working so well.
All it would take would be for pubbies to run two more candidates and campaigns as brain-dead as John (the “maverick(TM)”) McCain.
No doubt someone is fashioning a Crown for Obama right now.
A bill to repeal the 22nd Amendment has been introduced in every Congress for many years now, even back to, and probably prior to, Clinton’s terms.
22A was written and passed in order to prevent a repeat of the fascist Franklin Deficit Roosevelt’s 4 terms.
Leave it to the ‘Rats to have another go ...
At least Hugo Chavez waited until he was actually in office to try this.
HUSSEIN = CHAVEZ
Chavez amended the laws so he could be dictator in perpetuity.
Chavez created the Red Shirts or goons squads to intimidate people and voters.
Notice any similarity ?
Relax. This is just the beginning of Democrats over reaching. If this gains any momentum at all, the blowback will be fun to watch, as will Democrats squirming as a result.
Pass the popcorn....
Not going to happen. Don’t worry about it.
FDR & Obama, birds of a feather.
I keep thinking, “Up like a sky-rocket; down like the stick.” The Dear Leaser is BOUND to disappoint the people who used him as a kind of political Rorschach screen on which they could project their fantasies. And I think the disappointed will be angrier at him than we are.
Serrano is firmly entrenched. He is a congressman from a highly Hispanic district in the Bronx. Anyone who would challenge him would probebly have similar views on this issue—and forget a Republican in this district.
The expectations for this clown are sky high and with his current hires for his administration I don’t think he can deliver anything close to those expectations. This is a prescription for failure.
Consideraing the hires, the results should be about the same as the last administration they were a part of. Nothing lasting.
“Ill be surprised if he lasts one term.”
I’ll be surprised if he lasts one year.
There is nothing in the 22nd Amendment about whether the terms are consecutive or not.
No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once...
But then the author is a "professional journalist" while I'm just some guy on the internet, so what the heck do I know?
