Sometimes a search for bad friggin' hair leads me down memory lane...as in the stone ages...at least when it comes to the Internet. Today I found a "caption this" contest for the UK's Ariadne Magazine with a deadline of November 1, 1996.

I really don't know, I guess I'm just cursed with a knack for remembering useless information.

Well, I remember who sang (I Wanna be) Bobby's Girl, but not the Sylvers.

I grew up on an Army post during the 1970s, and my two siblings and I were the only — and I do mean ONLY — white kids in the neighborhood. As a result, I grew up immersed in the funky sounds of ‘70s black rock, pop, soul and R&B. While all my little white friends at school were rocking to the sounds of KISS, Foghat, and Ted Nugent, I preferred the Rev. Al Green, Bootsy Collins, Stevie Wonder, Ohio Players, Earth Wind & Fire, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Lou Rawls, Brook Benton and the Sylvers. Laugh if you like, but the Sylvers were the hottest band around in 1975-76 — they had two Top 10 Billboard hits (a #1 with “Boogie Fever” and a #3 with “Hot Line”) during that period. They also appeared on TV during a Super Bowl broadcast (Super Bowl X, if I remember correctly).

I thought that they were the greatest. I still enjoy that old music, too. As the neighborhood kids used to say, “dat brown sound sho’ do get around!”.

That was how me and my brother were in the early 70s, we really didn’t listen to much rock, but more Earth, Wind and Fire, Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang, The Ojays, etc. One of my favorite all-time albums was Bloodstone’s “Natural High” album. Of course, everybody knew the title track, but I thought every song on that album was great. Then disco came along, and totally destroyed R&B, then I started discovering prog rock bands, like Genesis.

Chris (the drummer) must be suffering from that syndrome that results in premature aging.

Yeah, disco pretty much ruined everything. Oh, there were a few disco cuts worth the trouble (the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album comes to mind here), but for the most part is was a shower of dreck. Fortunately, Punk started up just as Soul was fading away... but I was too young for the first wave and had to catch the New Wave later.

I listen to classical music these days... and very little else.
