SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- During the presidential election, some Democrats demanded to know how I could defend Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.
Simply put, Palin is my people. She's small-town folk who wound up in the big leagues.
Because I grew up in a small town with a population of less than 15,000 people, I was disgusted by the insults and condescension coming from those who think of themselves as the enlightened elite. Meanwhile, in small towns, I detected great affection for Palin. People talked about how she was "a real person" who "reflected their values."
The most significant divide in America isn't Red State vs. Blue State, it's rural vs. urban. The country mouse and the city mouse are still slugging it out.
In 1982, New York Mayor Ed Koch ran unsuccessfully for governor of New York. Some say the deciding factor was when Koch described life in upstate New York as "sterile" and said he dreaded living in the "small town" of Albany, if elected. That didn't play well in rural areas.
Now comes Colin Powell. During a recent appearance on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS," Powell attempted an autopsy on the Republican Party's failed presidential bid. He went after Palin, accusing her of pushing the party so far to the right that it went over a cliff.
"I think [Palin] had something of a polarizing effect when she talked about how small-town values are good," Powell said. "Well, most of us don't live in small towns. And I was raised in the South Bronx, and there's nothing wrong with my value system from the South Bronx."
You'd think the presidential campaign was about conservatives picking on urbanites. It wasn't.

The author makes a great point: It's not so much red vs. blue state as urban vs. rural. Having lived in both, you couldn't pay me enough money to live in most urban areas anymore.
In my estimation, Sarah Palin is a star not yet risen. But, rise she will. I am very optimistic about her and the promise that she and people like her offer this nation.
Sarah Palin can win an election and govern effectively. That is what scares democrats and that is why they so desperately want to minimize her.
Who cares?
The major cities in the US, especially LA, SF, Chi, NY, Philly, DC, Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, call the shots now. They will tax the small towns to take care on the inner city losers.
Small towns don’t matter. We are now responsible for minorities, no matter how stupid and irresponsible they are.

DING! DING! DING!!!!!
there’s nothing wrong with my value system from the South Bronx.”
*******
Disloyalty must be one of those values.

Try reading the article before you post innanities.
It was actually quite good, and very complimentary towards Palin. The author clearly “gets it”.

That's right. Sarah Palin was loathed because she appealed to small town America. Dangerous because she is ignorant of the things elites believe to be essential.
Presupposing that she runs (I’m praying), she CAN win. In the primaries her people need to lay a good game plan down for both Iowa and NH. Her people need a strong grassroots network. I think DraftSarah 2012 and Team Sarah are good starts. In the general election she and the GOP need to focus like a laser beam on first and foremost bringing OH, NC, Indiana, VA, NV, CO, FL NH, and IA back into the fold.
The good news is some of these states will naturally trend back GOP beginning in 2010 when 2 full years of Chicago-style socialism has bankrupt these states. Sarah just has to be out there in 2010 stumping for conservatives.
I think the Founding Fathers would be proud of this American and future USA President.
After all, isn’t that what spreading the wealth is all about?
The city mouse wants the government to give him free cheese. The country mouse makes his own at home and sells the rest at a profit.
Sarah Palin can win an election and govern effectively. That is what scares democrats and that is why they so desperately want to minimize her.
Sarah Palin can win an election and govern effectively. That is what scares ENTRENCHED democrats AND ENTRENCHED REPUBLICANS and that is why they so desperately want to minimize her.
There, fixed it..
Last night I thought about Obooboo’s Christmas speech, and how he doesn’t really speak to people. He speaks at people. In fact, I think Obama doesn’t like or care about anyone but himself, and maybe his family, and it shows when he tries to get personal with Americans. He reads out garbage like his Christmas speech and thinks he is connecting with people, but only a dunderheaded Marxist could relate to it. Sarah is the exact opposite. She likes people, cares about people, and it shows. When she speaks, she speaks to people, not at them. She is genuine, as opposed to the fraud Obama. I hope Sarah accepts the challenge of rebuilding the Republican Party, and leading a national effort to defeat the Communist. It will give her a chance to learn what she needs to know before running for president.
The “small town values” comment from Palin was irrelevant. Anything she said was going to be used as a club by her detractors. What was she supposed to have said, she supported big city values? She didn’t come from a big city. She came from small towns where the atmosphere was conducive to being a good American. If the liberal nuts in the big cities don’t like it, too bad.

That’s all fine and well, but this article being written by one of the biggest open border advocates in the MSM, Ruben Navarrette Jr. , makes me wonder about Palin’s immigration stand. It’s past time she gets on board and addresses this so we know where we’re headed with her.
I think it’s more rural/suburban vs big city hellholes. All the large cities have corrupt Dems running them into the ground
