It was “AskJeeves”, and way back then I recall being on some website on which AJ was a banner ad, and it sampled some obnoxious sexual thing in its ad! I wrote them right away and asked why did they have to put out sexual stuff on an ad?

How does Scroogle work? Do they use Google, but bypass the spying?
