In poor third-world countries, people riot and stampede over food and basic necessities. It is literally a matter of life and death.

In America, shoppers trample fellow human beings over DVD players and video games.

A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

Paramedics treated the woman inside the store and then, according to Keys, told the woman:

"There's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."

He could have been talking about our society as well...

Consumers are setup and sucked into mob mentality on Black Friday by retailers. It can be avoided, but there is money to be made safety and commonsense is secondary.

Having traveled to over 30 countries on six continents, it amazes me what qualifies as poor here, when the vast majority haven't the first idea what poor TRULY means.

The economy sucks, we're all going bankrupt, yadda yadda yadda, but you still have a roof over your head and food on the table and a job to go to in the morning. Please don't tell me that we're not obsessed with materialism.

Everyone on my list is getting cards telling them a charitable donation was made in their name. If they don't like it, too bad. It's more than I've gotten from most of them over the past few years.

Right on. The military also sent me all over the world and I’ve seen some sad things. We have the richest, fattest, most well taken care of poor people in the world.

Horrible story. It should be noted that that particular mall, a few hundred yards from the Queens (NYC) border, is a “Third World Country”, 365 days a year. Most Long Islanders haven’t shopped there for years, because of the crime.

I wonder what the exit polling of those shoppers would reveal? Personally, I’d shut down the store with everyone in it and herd them all off to a local stadium to sort them all out - sans merchandise.
