There’s self-reliance and then there’s self-reliance. I suspect the kind of self-reliance you mention can be equated with subsistence living using antique skill sets.
Those wanting to live by “free state” rules stay or they’re free to leave.
Those coming IN to free states, however, must pass some basic civics courses (which would inherently be de facto ideological test because you’d have to understand founding principles).
For a guy who is not a nutjob conspiracy theorist blowhard, he sounds an awful lot like a nutjob conspiracy theorist blowhard.
Whole Oats can definitely be kept for years.
Most hard grains (unground) store for years. The hard outer shell is a near perfect container.
Hermetically sealed white rice (no oxygen) will keep 8-10 years. Unfortunately, white rice has little nutritional value.
Brown rice, which contains essential fatty acids, goes rancid in about 6 months.
BTW, alfalfa seeds germinate beautifully after 3 years storage.

Read the above article. Read the yellow highlighted part twice. Then think about it.
Problem is, if there was ANY DISRUPTION IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN, we’d have 200+ million people sitting around whining about how hungry they were, and saying over and over “It’s not my fault..”
Cry me a freakin river...
"As an increasing number of farms devote their corn crops to the production of ethanol rather than animal feed, feed costs have exploded, from less than $1 per bushel last year to more than $4 today.
Turkey feed is about one-third of the cost of raising a turkey," she said. "We feed turkeys a combination of corn and soybean."
With many growers switching to the more profitable corn for ethanol, turkey farmers are trying to cope with a one-two punch of increasing corn prices and decreased soybean production.
According to some estimates, the higher prices translate to about an 8 cent increase per pound, per turkey, or about a 35 percent increase in the cost of raising just one bird.
People are already holding back on spending. My family has made the decision not to buy Christmas gifts this year. And I’m sure we’re not alone. With no one spending there will be no tax to collect. With no one working there will be no income tax to collect. I’ve probably got enough cash to last 6 months. That is if the bank stays open and if the cash has any value.
I see an “end of the world” crisis coming. Personally I believe it is Biblical. But for those who disagree, there is still an “end” coming.
I said on another thread as I told my wife this morning, A millionaire and a homeless man will be equal. The homeless man will have no money and the millionaire’s money will be worthless. Then it will be the survival of the fittest. Is this what the Mayan’s and other ancients were predicting?
If all of this comes to pass then it made no difference who won the election. It’s time to turn to God.
Nice link.
Thanks
What if conservatives in liberal states, or liberals in conservative states, don't want to leave their homes and want to keep advocating the political positions they believe in? Then what?
For sheer calories, it can be stored hermetically sealed with no oxygen.
I suppose they could, but I wouldn’t see the point.
What you want is only a simple move away. I couldn’t understand a conservative staying in a “people’s republic” just because they like their house. And as far as changing the policies of their region, well, that’s the point of the separation.
rice doesn’t last four years...
Yes it can- dry pack canned way longer than that so long as it is not brown rice.
I’ve got to finish my third novel in a hurry, or it’ll be overtaken by events.
You won’t be laughing much if the whip comes down. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst.
....i like where my family is located for even a worst case scenario. Im glad we do not live near any cities. We also have plenty of natural resources and because of the rural flavor of this town, most of us are armed to the teeth...
same here. Fish, hunt, garden.
Considering "a brick of gold" would probably weigh close to 1000 oz @ 700.00/oz that would equal $700,000.00/brick. Mentioning buying bricks "plural" (more than one.... your now at 1.4 million dollars .... my question is how does a single mom and a vegetarian get this kind of money to buy "bricks" of gold???
Hey I used to laugh at her as well, she doesnt own a refridgerator and lives in rented apartment and doesnt belive in western medicine (refues to buy healthcare - goes to herb shops for holistic healing) but she buys gold and silver! Now I’m thinking she has invested wisely.
OK Enough already! I used the term “bricks” because as I said before I dont know how you buy gold except for coins...All I know is she has been buying it for a few years now.
I think he's right about the starvation thing too. This can be avoided - but I don't see it happening...
