How Rush Limbaugh helped elect Barack Obama

Conservative radio buffoon Rush Limbaugh thinks of himself as an ace strategist and so he thought he was being extremely clever back in March when he launched "Operation Chaos" an effort to undermine frontrunner Barack Obama's chances in the fall election by prolonging the Democratic primary season and forcing Obama to deplete his resources early. Rushbo, accordingly, urged his conservative Republican listeners to take advantage of open primaries in many thats that allow non-Democrats to participate and vote for Hilary Clinton in order to drag the race out as long as possible. Brilliant eh? And how mischievous!

Unfortunately the Limbaugh his plan was too clever by half and has backfired.

DNC chair Howard Dean has talked about the importance of a "50 state strategy" for the past four years and Obama embraced the idea but it was the prolonged primary season that allowed Obama to implement it by virtue of necessity as the never ending race forced him to recruit ground organizers and campaign in red states that are usually flyover states for the Dems such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana. When the fall campaign came around, polls showed Obama competitive in states that the Democrats had long written off as a result of his spring campaigning and allowed him to use ground organizations left over from the primary season in order to keeps those states competitive forcing McCain to campaign in states which should have been sure things for him. Moreover, Obama won North Carolina and Indiana and thereby assured himself the presidency thanks, in no small part, to Rush Limbaugh's efforts.

Operation Chaos had one goal: throw chaos into the Democrat nomination process. That DID happen.

When you’re in a war, you never know what will happen. Hussein got the Oval Office....let’s see how much America likes his “Change.” My guess is most won’t like it after a while.

Oh, the welfare recipients might. But the investor class won’t. Those union workers won’t—especially the coal miners whose industry is going to be handstrung.

The kids in college who would’ve lined up to fellate Hussein, in four years, will be trying to move up in the business world...and with Hussein’s vision, they’ll stay STUCK in jobs. Hussein won’t look so appealing then.

Rush isn’t to blame for Hussein’s election. American voters chose him. God help us all.

Lady Cannuck, this is not a good time to be trashing Rush Limbaugh at FR. In a few weeks, we'll probably get around to analyzing the ridicule Rush just could not bring himself to stop sending McCain's way, but for now it's a little early to look too deeply into the just completed ascendancy of the fauxman president.

At worst, if Op Chaos didn’t make much of a difference it was at least a good mobilizing exercise for the base.

And I don’t think it was a distraction from selecting a better GOP candidate — wasn’t McCain already a lock by then?

What put Obama over the top was the financial crisis that the Democrats created and the Party in power always takes the blame from the sheeple. Donald Duck could have beat McCain this fall. Rush is not and has not been the Problem. If you think so you have a problem with reality.

“Operation Chaos had one goal: throw chaos into the Democrat nomination process. That DID happen.”

According to Limbaugh:

“The dream end of this [of Operation Chaos] is that this keeps up to the convention, and that we have a recreation of Chicago 1968 with burning cars, protests, fire, and literal riots and all of that, that is the objective here [of Operation Chaos].”

That DIDN’T happen. And the blowback was that if it helped to prolong the primary season it also forced the Obama campaign to steel itself in numerous states and thus laying the groundwork for it to win in the fall.

Yeah, the “dream end” being the key phrase there. The primary goal was what I said. :)

And my earlier statement still stands. America is responsible for the vote: not Rush.

I don’t think McCain was quite a lock, and the thing that bothered me was that Rush several times specifically said that he wouldn’t be involved in the GOP candidate selection process. I think a lot of people were waiting for a bit of guidance. That is, we didn’t necessarily have to agree with Rush, but it would have been nice to hear his analysis of the candidates.

Yes Americans are responsible for Obama’s election - but Rushbo helped make it happen by forcing the Obama to campaign heavily in states they otherwise may never have gone to and build organizations where otherwise they might not have been motivated to.

Of course, Sarah Palin’s general boneheadedness helped too as did McCain “suspending” his campaign.
