If you live in an apartment, townhouse, condo, etc. and share walls with another household, I would definitely opt for the scattergun (shotgun). While you should always be conscious of what's behind your target, nobody can see through walls. A shotgun takes away a lot of the concern you'd have about killing a neighbor in bed while you were trying to exorcise the demon in your house, and increases your probability of achieving a solid, rapidly incapacitating hit under stress.

Wrong caliber. Get a .308 if possible. The only advantage of .223 is when you kill the perp, he may provide you with free ammo. The .308 tends to go through brick and iron and reach deeper. The perp may even die with his pooper wrong side out when he discovers how out gunned he is. Most military weapon are .223 or AK ammo. AK-MAC-90-SKS type guns are fun, but have the power of a 30-30 or so. I have pistols that nearly match that. I have 2 mini14’s, 1 mini 30, and 2 MAC-90’s. I also have a M1A in .308, and a M1 Garand. I use the mini 30 for fun and the M1A for everything else. Depends on what you are using it for and how much money you have. I prefer shooters to wall hangers.

First reply is correct. Get a .308, .270, 30-06 or the like. 25-06 & .243 are great for a longer distance with a flatter tragectory.

Talking about the big boys toys, get a .270 magnum.

Good suggestion; my AR-10 in .308, 7.62 x 51mm is my primary “reach out and touch someone, from afar”, but it’ll set you back about $2,700 plus a good piece of glass (mine’s a Leupold cq/t mk4 and it cost $1,100 about 2-3yrs ago - http://www.leupold.com/tactical/products/scopes/mark-4-cqt-riflescopes/ ).

A .50cal Beowulf (NOT BMG) is also a nice piece, with an Eotech sight. I’ve got one of those, too.

http://www.50beowulf.com/

I’ve also got several Class III AR-15s, short barrels, suppressors, full-auto/3-round burst, and a list of options to make the head spin.

But what to get for under-$1,000? Depends...

*What do you want to use this weapon for, exactly, BP?*

Get an AR chambered for 5.56 not .223. Same round but Nato 5.56 is a hotter load. AR’s are great, 5.56 is a hec of a lot cheaper than .308 and you can carry alot of it. I wouldn’t worry about anyone getting up after a torso shot from a 5.56 either. If you want to spend some cash get an LMT, Knight Armaments, Noveske, or Colt. Rock River, Stag and Bushmaster also good and a little cheaper. If it has a carry handle make sure its removable so it can change to a flat top, it opens up your optics choices.

It’s one I never want to have to use. I will not spend a lot of time shooting it (too much $$$). It’s for 2nd Amendment purposes.

You can get a 500 round case of Lake City .223 at sportsmansguide.com for $220. (Russian Wolf brand is cheaper but I do not recommend it).

If price is an issue, you are far better off getting an SKS or AK for hundreds of dollars less than an AR-15, and use the money you save to buy ammo. If you do not practice with it until it becomes second nature, you will just freeze if you have to use it under stress. And AK ammo is also cheaper than .223

Pretty much to protect against the possibility of any “civilian defense force” trying to take away my civil rights.

I currently have a Beretta .40 cal. I will probably be getting a shotgun one of these days as well.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely be learning how to use it. But once I’m comfortable with it, I want to put it away, and have it WORK if I ever needed it to.

It would have to be, obviously, very reliable.

The SKS and AK are designed to be operated by peasants with little training, be utterly reliable even if not maintained as well as the manual says, and will reliably hit a man-sized target at 100 yards. And you can get an SKS for about $250, and an AK for about $500, leaving you with money left over in your budget for ammo and a range membership.

You can get rifles with much better accuracy, but keep in mind that YOU will be unable to hit a target past 50 yards without decent and regular practice, regardless of the quality of your rifle.

Rock River Arms... Depending upon the job at hand, you can choose either the LAR-08 in 7.62mm, or one of the various 5.56mm carbines or rifles. Rock River Arms quality is second to none.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT BUY STEEL CASED AMMO TO FEED AN AR-TYPE RIFLE!!!

BTW, FWIW, I sold many Rock River Arms CAR-4 model 5.56mm carbines this past summer for $960 (plus tax and background check) at the gunshows. That included the flattop upper with the optic platform and rear-sight attached, magazine, tech-manual, and an airline-approved hardshell case. The LAR-08s went for $1185, with the same accessories...

An AR-15 to a 30-06??? No way!!!!! I'm a gunsmith, retired ranger, and a competitive shooter. The 06 case is way too long for that action. It is even way too long for the AR type 308’s.
The BS buzzer is screaming.
