We give the Amish entirely too much credit. Now you can pick up the Best/Worst-Dressed edition of People and read about Amish puppy-abuse in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Seems that those unworldly folks of faith have figured out that Americans cant resist cute puppy eyes in a pet store. Massive Amish puppy mills are churning out sub-standard pups, caging animals in enclosures too small to allow the animals to stand, and shooting sick and unproductive animals. At least one of these good people shot all of his dogs when he learned that the authorities were planning to pay him a visit.
Buy your Amish milk from an Amish cow, perhaps; dont buy a puppy.

For folks who claim to be not of this world, they've sure figured out how to make a buck off it.
I doubt too many Amish are having trouble meeting their sub-prime mortgages.
tell me about it!!! My sister in law had an “amish” log cabin. built by the “amish”. amish cabinets etc...inside. Amish quilts for sale in restaurants and flea markets, amish chicken in the grocery store. Boy do they know how to capitalize on capitalism but they HATE the “english” and our world but don’t mind cashing in on it!
I live and work among the Amish. I hire about 5 teenage girls and then am hired by others to drive them from place to place. And yes, I am licensed by the State of Indiana to do that.
These are hard working people. They are enterprising and thrifty. They are also just regular people with some good and some bad among them. The ones I know personally do NOT hate English.
There are puppy mills all over the US and not all are owned by Amish. There are a few in our area, as well as some dairies, hog farms, chicken barns and duck houses. These birds and animals are cared for just as the English care for theirs.
Their horses are well cared for and housed and fed better than I ever cared for my own horses. If a family loses a horse, it is a devastating blow. There always seem to be diseases such as West Nile Virus that take so many before the vaccine can be developed. Then there are the dreaded potholes made by roads too cheaply made. A horse can injure a leg stepping in a pothole, just as you and I can.
I recently witnessed a horse have a heart attack. The family is still devastated over the loss. This mare was not too young, not too old, not too fat, not too thin, was not too hot but just plain had a heart attack in the middle of the road right in front of my van. Of course it was the horse that the family had spent the most money ever buying her. Bob's dad also had a heart attack. Lots of humans do too. But there is nothing one can do when a horse has one. They didn't save Bob's dad either.
Most of the real Amish will laugh when you tell them that there are Amish this and that for sale. They especially laugh when someone tries to sell Amish water. Mostly it is greedy English and pawn off goods as Amish because Amish sells.
I don't say my products are Amish, I say I live in Amish country. Seventy-five percent of the households in this county are horse and buggy Amish.
Despite the fact that I am from California, I have been accepted by these people and participate in their community activities. They call me by name.
So make sure your log cabin really came from Amish and not Conservative Mennonites or some other sect such as the Beachies or the Whistlers or the Plain People. They are around here too.
I don’t mind you chiming in. You have to read back on my blog where I talked about a friend of mine who buys raw milk and thinks because it comes from an “Amish” cow, it is somehow going to be free from bacteria. I am poking fun at silly gullibility as much as I am satirizing the Amish.
I live among the Amish, as well. I worked for a workers’ comp insurance company that covered many businesses that hired Amish workers. They are a mixed bunch, as are the rest of us. But I think it is undeniable that some of them take advantage of “English” gullibility and also have learned to turn “English” ways and laws to their advantage.
Is there a Amish hating clique hanging around FR?
I don’t think so. I’ve just blogged about them before, and was feeling the need to stray from my depressive obsession with Obama. Actually, my bemusement is with OUR fascination with all things Amish, not what the Amish do or don’t do.
Howdy, neighbor ...
Agreed, just as with any other group there are good and bad amongst the Amish.
My folks told me their newly arrived Pennsylvania Amish neighbors met with the Berne Amish and the Nappanee and Shipshewana groups to discuss their schools.
Because of their differing accents they couldn’t understand each other — had to break down and conduct the meeting in English.
I don’t know what to think about the puppy mills. We see a lot of sale ads for dogs and equipment lately. Perhaps the puppy business has peaked.
We defintely need a distraction. It is depressing to here about Barry 24/7.
Since the Nickel Mines tragedy there have been a lot of school meetings.
