Early Obama buyer's remorse in FL

Posted on 10/24/2008 11:27:52 PM PDT by WestFlorida

My wife, five kids and I live in St. Petersburg FL, which, outside of southeast FL is the most liberal part of the state. So I wasn't too surprised when 3 neighbors went out and got 0bama signs after I put my McCain sign out. They are all teacher's union/tree hugger types, so no big deal. Then I see the tree hugger talking to a sweet little old lady across the street from us, we call her Miss Mary. She's 94 years old and has taken a liking to our family since we moved in a couple of years ago.

Anyway, shortly after he leaves I see a "Change" sign in her yard. We were a little surprised and disappointed, but didn't make a big deal about it. About a week later my son and I are playing catch in the front yard and she comes over to me. Her sign is gone. She says "I know you guys saw my 0bama sign, but I talked to my son and am voting for McCain now. I wasn't even going to vote initially, because I just don't keep up with the news as much as I should." So I got her an absentee ballot form and talked to her about some of the issues for a while.

My final point is that I think their are a LOT of Miss Mary's out there and they are going to start changing their minds over the next few days. We have to remember not everyone takes politics as serious as we do; we HAVE to talk to our friends and neighbors and not take anything for granted. We get no help from the leftstream media so it is up to us to spread the truth.

Incidentally, early voting here including absentee requests still favors us by about 55k, assuming Reps vote McCain and Dems vote 0bama. This is good because Kerry outnumbered Bush in early voting/absentee in 2004. Still a week to go, though. And another one took down an 0bama sign also, only about a week after they put it up! This one I think got talked into putting it up by one of their thugs who was walking our neighborhood.

My mom was gonna vote Obama til I talked to her. She called last week and was proudly filling out her absentee ballot for McCain. Might be a good idea to call your parents.

We need a great conservative schlep. Its funny, sarah silverman didn’t even bother to participate in her own propaganda campaign to convince elderly jewish grandparents to vote Obama.

At any rate, a voter’s preference for Obama is like a bell curve. Its low when they don’t know anything, it gets much higher when they first see him speak, and then gets low again when they find out his record.

Hopefully Obama has peaked early for most voters and more stuff like this happens.

Someone I know said they think people may go in intending to vote for him and then think “what the hell am I doing?”
Lol...we can only hope I guess. The kool-aid is pretty strong.

'My mom was gonna vote Obama til I talked to her. She called last week and was proudly filling out her absentee ballot for McCain. Might be a good idea to call your parents.'

Unfortunately that's not the case with mine. My mother nearly tore me a new one when I told her I was voting for McCain. She asked why I didn't support 0bama, and I told her because of the high taxes. She then yelled that I didn't make $250,000.00 (0bama's magic number), and asked why I was "worried about the White man".

I retorted because my employer, one of those "White men", does make $250,000.00, and could possibly lay me and thousands of other poor Black people off, and that I'd been laid off once before and that it wasn't much fun.

...She seemed to calm down quite a bit after wards, perhaps not too pleased at the prospect of me going to Texas and showing up on her doorstep for free room and board.

I voted straight Republican Friday afternoon in Texas. All of the voters there were “Republican Looking” types. Of course Obama will be lucky to get 30% of the vote in my County.

I have a friend who got laid off last week. Uggh. Another has been unemployed for 8 months..but probly has not tried to hard and another Who had a painting company with 12 ee’s and is now down to odd jobs by himself. It is tough out there right now. But I think it will get worse before better. Socialism is NOT the answer. Sounds good does not work. McClame is socialism lite. Obama is communism in the end. Good Luck

Did you ask or do you know why your mother *is* going to vote for him?

That’s the thing with too many people. They don’t think about the country as a whole. They only think about what’s in it for themselves. Don’t know if that’s your mom or not but I know it is for far too many.

I am dirt poor and rely on welfare because I’m disabled. An Obama win would be more likely to help my life but it’s not about me. It’s about the whole United States.

Obama is pushing people to vote early. Makes me wonder what he's afraid may be coming out at the last minute.

RE: “my step daughter still plans to vote for Obama.Very stubborn”

**********

Did you give her the example we’ve all seen here of libs (Dems) v. conservatives (or Repubs)? It’s the anecdote about two college students — one who works very hard, nose to grindstone, gets straight A’s, etc., and the second who parties, barely gets by grade-wise, etc.

Left-leaning girl (like your stepdaughter) is told, by you, that she should favor taking a couple of her hard-earned A’s and give them to the partying “C” student so that student would have a better GPA. It would be more “fair.” ...Kind of like that Obama wealth redistribution thing..

In the anecdote, the good student is appalled, saying “No, taking some of my good grades away would not be fair, I earned my good grades!”

Her father replied simply: Welcome to the Republican party!

Did the same thing in Collin County, Texas. 75+ in front of me to vote and about the same number standing in line when I finished. Seems like heavier turnout than ‘04.

Crowd looked like a 7-3 split in favor of GOP. Of course, the Obama support could be misleadingly high because it was early afternoon and those likely to have voted for Obama looked like unemployed/welfare recipients, etc. That’s not the typical makeup of the county. And more importantly, that magical ‘youth vote’ that Obama supposedly has (just like Howard Dean) was nowhere to be found.

I canceled out her Texas 0bama vote via absentee ballot mailed a couple of weeks ago. :)
