LATimes' Snead: Palin With 'Rifle' on Newsweek Cover... is it 'OK?'
publiusforum.com ^ | 10/09/08 | Warner Todd Huston

Posted on 10/09/2008 7:21:04 AM PDT by Mobile Vulgus

Over at the L.A. Times' The Dish Rag blog, Elizabeth Snead wonders how Newsweek got Governor Sarah Palin to pose "with a rifle" for the cover of its next issue? Snead then reveals that it was not a new photo but an old one, that the Governor did not pose for the cover at all, and wonders if it is right for the magazine to use the photo as they did? I suppose Snead wasn't really too worried about the photo, but she did just prove that she has no idea what a "rifle" is because Palin is holding a shotgun, not a rifle, in the cover photo.

Snead tries to give a ribbing to Governor Palin for holding the "rifle" over her shoulder with the barrel pointing toward the ground and the breach open with the shoulder stock draped over her left shoulder. Showing she has no idea how a firearm works, Snead wonders if Palin could "shoot" her "foot off like that?"

Hey, is that even the right way to hold a rifle? Can't you shoot your foot off like that?

What we have here is another denizen of Hollywood that knows zip about firearms. Palin is not holding a rifle. And even if it were a breachloading rifle, with the breach cracked open, draped over a shoulder, one cannot shoot one's foot off regardless. A breach must be closed before any foot shooting can be in the offing...

It’s a revolver, not an autoloader..It has a “shrouded” hammer, not internal...The hammer is sided by the frame...Makes an excellent “pocket” pistol...the hammer an’t catch on clothing when needed...

Is the slide rusted closed? Buy some break free.
It depends on how you want to carry. I Like my Sig .45 for home use and I have a little Kel Tec 9mm that can be concealed in the palm of your hand but it doesn’t have the best quality although it’s never misfired. Here’s a few cool links to peruse:

I had a friend look at it and he had no problem opening the slide but I couldn’t do it at all. However, break free might just help since it hasn’t been fired since the 80’s. It will be used for home safety plus I have a shoulder holster for concealed carry if I need to use it beyond the shooter course.

The guy who demonstrated the Beretta told me I should get a revolver, so that may just be the way to go. Thanks.

The firing plate is against the stock, and there is no closed chamber enabling gun powder to expand into a gas and force the charge down the chamber.

So you are correct. An open shotgun cannot be fired.

Didn’t get to use the shotgun my brother got to use. In those days, girls weren’t invited to use real ones, so it was the 80’s before I got with the program (and the Beretta).

It’s OK. Sarah exudes gun oil.

I saw the S&W online, the pocket pistol and think that might be the answer for me. Lightweight and ready to fire.

I don’t know much about guns, but more than Newsweek, anyway. I’m starting to think about getting one, though. It would be worth it just to drive the liberals around here in MA crazy.

Only problem is, I can’t pull back the slide (am I using the correct term?)

Unless the slide is stuck (jammed or rusted) or you have a limiting physical condition, almost any adult should be able to work the slide on a .380.

I've heard an instructor suggest holding the slide while pushing the frame forward, rather than holding the frame while pulling the slide backwards. While I can't say why it works, doing this allowed a very petite woman in my class to easily work the slide on a .45, which she hadn't been able to do initially.

Did they ever say anything about the Al Gore photo with his rifle butt on the ground and his head over barrel?

Anybody have that picture?

You mean the one posted at Post #7?

I guess I’ll suggest that you go to the gun store, examine the various types opf habdguns and have the clerk explain how they function. Then ask where you would be able to fire a couple of them. You may have to go to the range to do this, but it should be done before you buy.

Don’t use the deadliest ammunition while test firing, use target ammo. There’s no reason to fight the recoil until you become familiar with the weapons.

When you make your decision, I’d be interested in your final selection.

I think this is more telling then the picture. Palin-tol-ogy is a reference to paleontology. The implication being that Palin is a fossil or dinasaour.

I think it is more of a dig at her belief in Creation as opposed to Evolution as the origin of life.
