McCain Sees 17-Point Surge In USA Today Poll
The Royal Savage ^ | 9/8/2008 | Holden Des Montsverts

The USA Today/Gallup poll completed on September 7 has the McCain/Palin ticket holding a 10 point lead over Obama/Biden.

[Polling data can be found in original post]

This represents the first time McCain has led Obama by a double-digit margin since january, 2007. It also represents a 17 point swing in McCain's favor since the last USAT/Gallup poll completed on August 31 and the first time McCain has led Obama in the RealClearPolitics average since April.

Expect the panic in the Obama camp to spread accordingly.

The convention bounce has helped not only McCain but also attitudes toward Republican congressional candidates and the GOP in general.

Bigger convention bounce than Obama got and with one less day. I thought Obama’s speech was too negative. Don't celebrate yet though, W was 13 points up on Kerry after his convention and it tightened up. It always does, but I'm impressed with McCain. I thought at BEST he'd be even with Obama heading into the debates, it appears he may find himself ahead.

All the talk about McCain being another Dole was on my mind when McCain picked his running mate. In 1996 Bill Kristol urged Dole to take Powell for VP because, in Kristol’s words, “Dole needs to kick the table over to win this thing.” Dole took Kemp, a nice but conventional pick, then ran a boring campaign and lost big.

Friday morning rolls around and I hear Sarah Palin’s name and my first thought was, “John McCain just kicked the damn table over. He decided he doesn't want to end up like Dole.”

Sarah makes Obama look boring, makes McCain look smart, like the guy who knew something that no else did, and announced to the party and the world that John McCain ain't afraid of a thing. She also skillfully and cheerfully went about ripping Obama’s heart from his chest, freeing McCain to just be a nice guy in his speech.

McCain may love Teddy Roosevelt, but I believe in this election he wants Sarah Palin to be TR to Obama’s Bryan.

Here is what is happening. It is NOT, repeat, NOT enough to carry the victory.

1) The message of the McCain campaign was to be that “it’s about Obama.”

2) The message of the Obama campaign was to be that “it’s about Bush.”

Palin knocks both those messages off the table, and for the moment it is a huge plus. It can’t be McCain/Bush when everyone is talking about McCain/Palin.

But They Will Respond, and if they don’t panic they will get back to their message and pound it, pound it, pound it. This will work or not depending on one thing and that is the duration of Palin’s “celebrity status”. She only has to hold it 2 months. Obama’s use by date arrived and it hurt him badly.

In the meantime, the optimal Palin strategy is to do exactly what the McCain plan was all along . . . Make It Be About Obama. She’s doing that. She gets heard because of her celebrity. She is making it be about Obama.

Advantage distinctly McCain, as long as her face doesn’t become “old”. They are doing a nice job of limiting her exposure. They need to keep doing that.

Isn't he awful? When the local radio host here in Boston said "And now I'm gonna talk to Bill Press," I think I groaned out loud. Arrogance X Ignorance = Liberal Political Commentators.

I wonder of Eleanor Clift has changed her mind since calling Palin "The female Dan Quayle" or whatever she sniffed last weekend.

I hope so.  It's their message that's killing them.

LOL! Actually, it's almost difficult to fathom "Bill Press levels" of idiocy. Even insults to his intelligence fail to capture his rank stupidity.

How stupid is a party that nominates its fourth consecutive sociopath.

You’re right and I also think McCain himself had a lot to do with the bounce. For the first time, people, 40 million of them, got to see his story. It made an impact.

I talked to a young girl yesterday, early twenties. She said she knew he’d been a POW, but thought he was a POW like the Guantanamo Bay POWs. When they said he’d been tortured, she thought they meant stuff like playing loud music, keeping the lights on and waterboarding. She didn’t know his torture involved hurting his arms so bad that he’s forever denied saluting the flag.

So, as much as I like Sarah Palin (and I do, she’s brilliant) I think they both deserve credit.

"The libs are responding to these poll numbers by saying it’s innaccurate because the Gallup phone poll underrepresents the under-30 crowd, which is assumed to be pro-Obama, because they only have cell phones and aren’t home to take calls from pollsters on Friday and Saturday nights."

Dude! That's *so* 2004... all major polls contact cell phone users as of July, 2008.

Someone tag that DU poster or put a radio collar on it... it may be the endangered lib mutation whose recessive profanity gene hasn’t been reinforced with inbreeding but is overwritten by a single-factor of common sense. If it is ever able to find another of the opposite sex they may develop a breed of liberals that can learn new things or at least have feet too big to insert in their mouths.

Hey, hey, hey... don't get over-confident. These polls aren't yet measuring the backlash among community organizers.

Buwahahahaaha. I can't keep a straight face.

“I hope so. It's their message that's killing them.”

Yeah really, McCain being the same as Bush? that dog won't hunt. W, must laugh his butt off everyday when he hears that.

This is the first election in 50 years without an incumbent President or VP running and Obama’s pretending that he's running again Bush not McCain, It comes across as delusional wish fulfillment to the voters.
