Bob Herbert is now far into the fever swamps of kookland. Byron York:
I know it's been commented on elsewhere on the Web, but this exchange from MSNBC's "Morning Joe" is quite striking. New York Times columnist Bob Herbert was on to explain why he thinks the McCain "Celebrity" ad is racist. "The first thing you see are a couple of images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton, right? And we see an image of Barack Obama right after that," Herbert explained. And then he continued: "Do you remember any other startling images right there at the beginning? All right. There is an image right there in that very beginning of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and there is an image of the Washington Monument. Look at the beginning of that ad again, and you tell me why those two phallic symbols are placed there — POW — right at the very beginning of that ad."
The other people on the show didn't get it. "You didn't see them?" Herbert said.
"Really?" said Scarborough.
"Isn't that the Victory Column where he made his speech?" asked Jonathan Capehart and Willie Geist, referring to the structure actually portrayed in the ad.
"And also the — well, it looked like the Leaning Tower," Herbert answered. "But it's definitely a phallic symbol."
Obama's defenders on the left get pretty defensive when they're accused of venturing far afield in their quest to find derogatory messages in GOP ads. But we're in new territory now.

It seems that Bob Herbert is a little prickly.
I’m not sure I’m following — having an image of the Washington monument in a campaign ad is now racist?
Apparently, it implies sex. Throw into the mix a black man and a couple of blonde women, then you have racism. Anybody can play this game. It’s called: How paranoid schizophrenic can I be?
So what? McCain’s imaginary phallic symbol is bigger than obama’s imaginary phallic symbol? That’s not racist...it would only be racist if it were the other way around.
So, is Herbert saying that McCain is accusing Obama is being a, ehem, phallus?
The ad also had pictures of Germans. Does that mean McCain is accusing Obama of being a German?
In the wake of all this, does Herbert realize he’s being mocked?
This is the downside for OBAMA of having the MSM (in this case the NY TIMES reporter Bob Herbert)carrying water for you. Now OBAMA has to distance himself from this kook or look like one.
McCain only has to distance himself from Republicans who speak out of turn (one or two at the most).

I heard KSFO talk show personalities Lee Rodgers and Officer Vic say that they like the positions Paris Hilton takes and they'd get behind her. I don't get it. I thought you had to be 35 to run for president.
So if it's "definitely a phallic symbol", and a dark brown and black one, what hidden message was Obama trying to send by selecting that particular location to give his "Citizen of the World" speech? (NOT serious!)
