8 Handbags That Stand The Test Of Time (for Lady Freepers)
The Fashion Time Magazine ^ | Jul 2nd, 2008 | The Fashion Time Magazine

Giorgio Armani Clutch

Expensive handbags not only suffice as fancy accessories, but are a sign of the high ‘status’ of their owner. They are a worthy investment, and wealthy people are ready to spend thousands and thousands on them.

Forbes magazine unveiled the list of 8 new bags which stand the test of time, but we can’t agree with all of the items. While Mulberry’s Roxanne remains a bargain from Forever 21, Ralph Lauren’s Ricky bag is a nod to Birkin. There is only one bag that really stands the test of time - the Chanel 2.5 quilted bag and it’s twice as cheap as Giorgio Armani’s clutch, that remains a copy of Chanel.

The Prada bag reminds me of my leather bag I use for lugging gun gear to the range. Got it for $10 at a gun show.

I’ll stick with my durable plain leather $30 purse, thank you very much!

speaking of high end fashion... this is a good read on what has lead to the mass merchandising of high fashion these days:

When it comes to such items the women in my life have only one thing to say: Coach.

Personally, I think they're way overpriced. But what do I know? (Fill in your derision here).

Nomatter how wealthy I might one day ever be, I will never be able to fathom the concept of spending $16,000 on a bag. Or $10,000 on a watch, for that matter.

Since there’s so many cheap ones that look and feel and work exactly the same... what’s the point? If people don’t know how much it cost, there isn’t even any point in trying to be pretentious.

I don’t get it. Never will.

Mrs Suhks has that black quilted Chanel only with two CC’s on the buckle. And a red Jimmy Choo, two Marc Jacobs and a Gucci Indy.

I'm looking for a 12 step program for her. If she keeps it up I may need one too...

I agree with the “women in your life”. They are expensive but tf they need repairs they can be sent back to the company and repairs done for $20.00. If you treat them well, keep them cleaned and repaired they will last forever. Styles change very little so they are classic.

I hope you have her collection insured. Mine, well, is nothing to brag about. Utility trumps fashion, I guess.

I was talking about Coach bags. Coach bags are pretty much the same from year to year. I have one from college, that I could take to a dept. store and buy an almost identical bag today.

Many of the other brands are faddish and change styles quickly. Kate Spade is a good example, but hey, I have one of those too. lol

Maybe my mom should meet your wife. For a while, every Christmas, a family friend would bring my mom a real designer-label luxury purse - mostly Chanel, Gucci and Hermes. The last one was an Hermes Kelly bag (named for Grace Kelly, the actress) that the woman waited three years to get. That handbag costs thousands, as did the others, and my mom asked her to take it back or she would give it away. Mom has a preference for what’s on sale.

There are enough purses and handbags from this lady to my mom in her closet to pay for a new Purdey shotgun.

Not too sure who Jimmy Choo and Marc Jacobs are. I’m assuming they’re the latest young designers. One sounds Korean and the other American.

Oh Mrs Suhks cut her teeth on Coach, Dooney and Bourke and Blueberrys. ;o)

Now she's got a taste for these and it's embarrassingly expensive.

We used to sell Hermès in my old store before they demanded we put in a $300,000 fixture in 1985 so we dropped the line. We just sold the scarves and men's ties anyway, good business but not worth that price back then. Since I sold the business Hermès has been an issue and I think the closest one is in Manhattan so I don't have to worry. Hermès makes Chanel look like a bargain.

Jimmy Choo is a new designer and Marc Jacobs is a designer for Louis Vuitton.

Not only are Hermes products expensive, the saddle leather they use is so stiff, it’ll take decades to soften. When informed these luxury items will last ages, my mom said, “What do I care? I’m 78 and not going to be around that long!”

I bought a Coach purse back in 1989 when I got married.

Still use it today. Classic is forever. I hate changing bags!!

Some Coach bags probably last longer than the marriages. (Not suggesting that’s the case in your instance.)

$23,000 for a handbag is just plain stupid.
