Precisely why base commanders ban guns and ammo from the barracks.

Well, except in this case.

I knew a retired 0-6 who once made the comment that there was always a huge amount of pressure that you felt every single day. He couldn’t ever take more than a week off...worrying about some episode occurring and he ending up with blame over the episode. He had to worry about drug busts numbers...officer wives club rages...congressional investigations....audits of financial expenditures...shoddy constructed barracks...poor safety practices...poorly executed exercises....corrupt Club managers...and even environmental practices. As this guy indicated...he had rely on people doing their jobs...which eighty percent were more than capable It was the other twenty percent that always tripped him up and triggered issues. As he suggested...it was 300 percent of what a CEO would face, and he was happy to retire and take a lesser stressed atmosphere.

Actually, Jiminy Cricket, it would be the AFOSI (Air Force Office of Special Investigations)

Why he had a firearm in his residence is something worth investigating.

I hope his last assignment had nothing to do with this incident. Even if it did, I expect it will be listed as an accident.

"Why he had a firearm in his residence is something worth investigating."

Not sure about the USAF, but GO's in the Army are exempted from arms room storage requirements for their sidearms.

It’s Alaska. They sell pistols and rifles at the BX.

Housing residents can have firearms in their homes on base.

When I lived at Eielson AFB, whe only had to report how much black powder we were storing in our homes to the Fire Dept.

As an NCO, I always had my personal weapons in my quarters (on post housing).

Why should your quarters be any different than your home? Especially among men and women who were trained in their use?

Now reported (10PM TV news) as a ‘self-inflicted’ gunshot - all the local outlets have been *very careful* in avoiding the word suicide.

He was fairly well liked - the old Wing-King, he pulled a tour at HQ TAC (errr- make that ACC) and came back as a one button.

Usual path for EAFB CC was selection for 2nd star and a post as HQ TAC/DO or a tour at the Puzzle Palace.

AS noted elsewhere - stress is a strange thing....

A real shame - and prayers for the wife and college aged daughter who were home at the time....(shudder)
