Global Poverty Act up for Senate Debate
AZCONSERVATIVE ^ | 26 July 2008 | John Semmens

Posted on 07/28/2008 8:24:24 AM PDT by John Semmens

Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.) chided those who say he has no significant legislative accomplishments by pointing out that his Global Poverty Act (Senate Bill 2433) has already been passed by the House of Representatives and is now in the U.S. Senate.

“This bill exemplifies the message of change I bring to the world,” Obama said. “It commits this country to an unconditional worldwide war on poverty.”

If enacted, the legislation would commit the United States to spend over $800 billion to alleviate worldwide poverty. This amounts to more than $7,000 for every taxpayer in America. The funds would be transferred to the United Nations. The UN would determine which foreign governments would receive the funds.

“With billions of people living on just dollars a day around the world, global poverty remains one of the greatest challenges and tragedies the international community faces,” Obama said. “Americans have more than they need. It is their moral obligation to share their abundance with the less fortunate.”

The Senator derided the idea that markets, trade, and hard work are the path to economic prosperity—calling this approach a reliance upon the “engine of capitalistic greed.” “We must replace out-dated notions of self-reliance and individualism with a new social compact that recognizes the collective obligation the able have to carry the needy,” Obama said. “America is able. The Third World nations are needy. Our duty is clear.”

It does, but someone also needs to make sure that it gets massive media attention.

I don’t think there’s any way in hell the American public would go for it, especially at a time when so much of the general public believes the economy is headed down the toilet.

It’s only semi-satire. The bill is real.

I wrote both of my senators yesterday to help stop this farce. You should do the same!

You can see all the usual suspects in mouse1’s post. I see my RINO senator, Dick Lugar.
I expect McCain’s only regret is that it wasn’t his idea.

So, the US Senate has now taken up the task of impoverishing the entire world?

According to this source, the bill is still only scheduled for debate:

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s110-2433

If you look through the text to the bill at the above link, there is no mention of funding at all. Just a requirement for the President to develop and report a strategy for eliminating extreme global poverty within one year from the passage of the unpassed bill. If Senator Obama is claiming this as an accomplishment, it’s not much to brag about.

No mention of any House action or parallel house bill. What are your sources?

Here is a link to the House bill: http://www.opencongress.org/bill/110-h1302/text

Text is nearly (if not exactly) identical to the Senate version. Once again, just a requirement for the President to develop and report a strategy.

So where is the $800+ billion figure actually coming from??

If you are really interested, here is the (UN) Millennium Development Goal

There is a lot more than money involved here....control of pharmaceutical companies, gun control, Kyoto compliance...a lot more.

Obama's poverty bill has been around for some time - during the earlier part of his campaign, it was put on the back burner for obvious reasons. Educate yourselves:

(what this bill would mean to you)

If ever there were a time to contact your Senators, Now is That Time! Obama is NOT the One anyone is looking for!!

Exactly why would we want to give our money to the poor foreigners when we have so many poor and homeless Americans who could put that money to uses inside our own economy?

Holy crap! So they want to do to the rest of the world what they’ve already done to the nuclear black families of America? America be the world’s new baby daddy!

Let me look in my handy pocket Constitution and see just what part or amendment would make such an atrocity legal.

I was just checking this bill on Wikipedia and I came across this:

“A number of news outlets have made false reports about this bill and called it Global Poverty Tax. In February 2008, Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in Media wrote that the Global Poverty Act (S.2433) “would commit the U.S. to spending 0.7 percent of gross national product on foreign aid.” [1] This is not in the bill; the bill does not require any minimum foreign aid spending. The only requirement of the bill is that the President create a plan to address global poverty and it goes on to suggest what areas the plan will cover.[2] Other outlets ran a similar story including WorldNetDaily[3] which cites Kincaid as a source.”
