I'm Lovin' It (Large Fine for McDonald's for Hiring Illegals May Have Big Effect)
NRO's The Corner ^ | 7-17-08 | Mark Krikorian

A McDonald's franchisee in Nevada pled guilty and agreed to may a $1 million fine for its knowing employment of illegal aliens (the two executives involved will be sentenced later). This is indeed "a coup for the government's crackdown on employers of illegal immigrants," as the Wall Street Journal put it, but the fact that it's McDonald's is especially important. McDonald's is believed to be the company with the largest number of no-matches — that is, W-2s filed by the employer that have fake or mismatched Social Security numbers. That's from a 2004 report by the Social Security Administration (text, pdf) that didn't name names, but listed the top 100 no-match employers by state for 1997-2001, with one in Illinois as number 1.Since McDonald's is the nation's second-largest employer, is based in Illinois, and employs lots of immigrants, it's no stretch to assume McDonald's is the firm. The Nevada case involved a franchisee, not a company-owned store, but if this prompts McDonald's into doing what Dunkin' Donuts did a couple years ago, and requiring use of E-Verify in all franchise and company stores. it would have a big impact.

Glad to see any crackdown on employers who knowingly hire illegals. (Which is NOT to say I don’t want concurrent crackdowns on the illegals themselves. When you crack down on the latter, they often will turn state’s evidence to implicate others “up the food chain.”)

So, who will ultimately pay the $1,000,000?

That’s the problem with situations like this.

There should be no fines. Rather, the employees who perpetrated the scam should go to jail for awhile. And the employees who used identities belonging to someone else should go to jail also and then be deported.

The anecdotal evidence is that most people working in McDonald’s nowadays are native Spanish speakers. Which is not to say that they are in this country illegally, just saying, certain people seem to be working there.

Why is it that :

Most people working in gardening, landscaping, construction, are Hispanic?

Most people working in service jobs such as cleaning office buildings are Hispanic?

Most people running motels appear to be natives of India or Pakistan or elsewhere in the middle east or far east?

Most people running gas stations also appear to be natives of somewhere in the middle east?

Most people doing farm work are Hispanic?

I understand that immigrants have come to America, legally and not legally. What gets me is that 50 or 60 years ago, these jobs were mostly done by native born Americans. What has happened in this country that honest work such as these jobs represent are not being done by native born Americans? Do native born people not want to run gas station or motel franchise locations? Some such businesses do very well, and one could make a good living at it.

Are the less educated and motivated among us just not willing to do work such as cleaning office buildings? I’ve heard some of those people are unionized and make over $15 an hour, which I know isn’t a wage to get rich on. But, $15 an hour for someone with no education would be a good wage.

It seems sometimes that we have been “addicted” to having a foreign born service class to do some of these jobs for us. And that’s part of the people saying that our economy would fall apart without all the illegals who have come to America and doing some of the necessary work such as cleaning. Food for thought.

Also, in the case of identity theft, the victims should receive (tax-free) the total amount paid to the perps by the employer, maybe taken out of the fines. Or in addition TO the fines paid by the employer. The fraudulent employee should ALSO be required to pay the person whose identity he or she stole, though this might be harder to collect.

Yes, but your perspective is California, and only miles from the Mexican border. Here in Alabama it’s a different story.

Most service level jobs here are filled by blacks and poor whites. That’s been that way for the past century. So these jobs are still being done by mostly native-born Americans. We do have Hispanics working here, but they’re still the much smaller minority.

Did you read the whole article?

This is a local story for me. I know Luther Mack; a $1,000,000 fine for him is very painful. He takes money very seriously. Luther Mack is very plugged into the system. He is on the State boxing commission and a dozen other State and charitable organization boards etc. He is the token black guy in Nevada politics. Good speaker and has paid lots of money to various causes to be accepted into the system. Sad really.

There clearly has been a deal struck. His company will be on probation and three of his senior people are facing JAIL TIME as well as fines to the tune of $250,000. It is clear the Government chose them to make an example out of - rightfully so. About 28 of the illegals were deported and about 20 more are in the process of hearings court etc. The day the raids happened thousands - yes thousands of Hispanics were fleeing businesses of all types when the text messages started flowing. It was hysterical. Many left stores and just walked away. Some came back the next day expecting their jobs were still good. Lots were fired for leaving their post. Many were not.

My guess is that the franchise owner will pay the fine. I’m sure McD’s has something in their franchise contract that indemnifies the corporation for illegal action on the part of individual owners.

I would go one step further than the addiction mentality, and that would be to say that a disproportionately large percentage of our young folks (those on the cusp of college education, or those entering the workforce in general) have been raised as part of the MTV Generation. That is, they see themseves graduating high shcool and immediately becoming gangsta rappers/rock stars making a million a week, or going to school and becoming Gordon Gekko overnight. So few of them want to work hard; they see graft, connections, and the dimly defined ideal of sticking it to The Man as the best ways to get rich.

Hard work? That’s for idiots and losers.

The biggest economic upset in our nation’s history will come when the Loafaholic Generation reaches retirement age. They will collectively have the lowest accumulated asset level (relative to other generations before them), and Social Security will no longer exist. You reap what you sow.

Good. One of the local McD’s seems to be 100 percent illegals, the Popeye’s across the street about 95 percent (managers seem to be LEGAL immigrants). I went to the BK across the street from Sallie Mae in Reston VA a couple years ago and NOT A SINGLE EMPLOYEE SPOKE A SINGLE WORD OF ENGLISH.

Made my day!!...as McDonalds decision to be 'gay friendly' & touting the 'hate crime' for those who disagree.

Two different topics, but the general direction of McDonald's liberal policies.
