Why is it that :
Most people working in gardening, landscaping, construction, are Hispanic?
Most people working in service jobs such as cleaning office buildings are Hispanic?
Most people running motels appear to be natives of India or Pakistan or elsewhere in the middle east or far east?
Most people running gas stations also appear to be natives of somewhere in the middle east?
Most people doing farm work are Hispanic?
I understand that immigrants have come to America, legally and not legally. What gets me is that 50 or 60 years ago, these jobs were mostly done by native born Americans. What has happened in this country that honest work such as these jobs represent are not being done by native born Americans? Do native born people not want to run gas station or motel franchise locations? Some such businesses do very well, and one could make a good living at it.
Are the less educated and motivated among us just not willing to do work such as cleaning office buildings? I’ve heard some of those people are unionized and make over $15 an hour, which I know isn’t a wage to get rich on. But, $15 an hour for someone with no education would be a good wage.
It seems sometimes that we have been “addicted” to having a foreign born service class to do some of these jobs for us. And that’s part of the people saying that our economy would fall apart without all the illegals who have come to America and doing some of the necessary work such as cleaning. Food for thought.
Yes, but your perspective is California, and only miles from the Mexican border. Here in Alabama it’s a different story.
Most service level jobs here are filled by blacks and poor whites. That’s been that way for the past century. So these jobs are still being done by mostly native-born Americans. We do have Hispanics working here, but they’re still the much smaller minority.
I would go one step further than the addiction mentality, and that would be to say that a disproportionately large percentage of our young folks (those on the cusp of college education, or those entering the workforce in general) have been raised as part of the MTV Generation. That is, they see themseves graduating high shcool and immediately becoming gangsta rappers/rock stars making a million a week, or going to school and becoming Gordon Gekko overnight. So few of them want to work hard; they see graft, connections, and the dimly defined ideal of sticking it to The Man as the best ways to get rich.
Hard work? That’s for idiots and losers.
The biggest economic upset in our nation’s history will come when the Loafaholic Generation reaches retirement age. They will collectively have the lowest accumulated asset level (relative to other generations before them), and Social Security will no longer exist. You reap what you sow.
