Michelle Obama: $600 Stimulus Check Was Only Enough For A Pair Of Earrings
Say Anything Blog ^ | 7/16/08 | Rob

Maybe...if you buy the sort of earrings the wife of a US Senator who makes a big salary because her husband got her boss a big, fat earmark would wear.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, complained the government’s $600 economic stimulus check was only enough to buy “a pair of earrings” while stumping for her husband.

“You’re getting $600 - what can you do with that?” Mrs. Obama said in Pontiac, Michigan last week. “Not to be ungrateful or anything, but maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn’t pay down every bill every month. The short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good, and it may even feel good that first month when you get that check, and then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings.”

Kind of hard to campaign as the people who represent the little people when you’re talking about your $600 earrings and your husband is going about Iowa bemoaning the price of arugula.

All joking, and evidence of the Obama’s family complete lack of common sense, aside I actually agree with what Michelle Obama was getting at here. The rebate checks were a one-time thing. You spend them, and they’re gone along with any stimulus they may or may not have done for the economy.

If we want long term economic stimulus we need tax cuts, which would put more money in the pockets of Americans by letting them keep more of their paychecks every single pay day. The stimulus from that money would be robust and lengthy, though somehow I don’t think that’s quite what Michelle was getting at.

“Not to be ungrateful or anything, but maybe it pays down a bill, but it doesn’t pay down every bill every month."

Michelle, there is something that pays down every bill every month, it's called a JOB. It's not the function of gevernment to pay your bills, but to leave you enough money after taxes to pay your own.

Will someone please explain how she gets a $600 stimulus with a $4.2 million income?

You do sound ungrateful because you are ungrateful and bitter towards the greatest country on earth.

Aw, gosh darn it. That just makes me want to cling to my guns and my religion.

I’d bet REAL money that she didn’t get $600.

Frogdad and I got $4.25. We make too much money, dontchaknow, and she alone makes more than we do together.

Yes, it probably cost them more to process it than we got in this, to us, empty gesture.

If they want to really stimulate the economy, they’ll cut our bloody total taxes to something under 50%.

I’ve never spent $600 on jewelry in my life. I don’t know why, but I don’t care much for jewelry.

I've never spent $600 on jewelry, on clothes, on shoes or on anything like that.

I watched a friend pay $450 (on sale!) for a purse a couple of years ago and it just boggled my mind. A purse.

Keep talking Michelle, keep talking! Don't let that mean husband of yours muzzle you. You are your own woman, and you won't be told what you can and cannot say!

BTW, complaining about tax rebates? WTH?

LOL And the leftists like to claim that the Obama's aren't really elitists. This should go over like a lead balloon (if the MSM will even report it).

"This should go over like a lead balloon (if the MSM will even report it). "

Which they won't.

I see on Drudge that all three MSM news anchors will be chasing Obama like panting lap-dogs on his upcoming overseas foray.

Should he become ill and puke in the German Chancellor's lap, do you really, really think the MSM will show loop after loop of it like Bush the First?

These guys don't even PRETEND to be objective anymore.

Kiss my middle-class rear, Michel. It was my money to begin with. Your husband and you and your big government god don't make or produce a damn thing.

Fedgov revenues are taken from tax-payers!

Fedgov revenues are taken from tax-payers!

One more time: Fedgov revenues are taken from tax-payers!
The government has NO money other than what it TAKES from tax-payers. Whey can't you bleeding-heart liberals get this grammar school concept?

I guess I’m a cheapskate, but I don’t like spending more than $20 on a purse, preferably less :) The most expensive item I’ve ever purchased was a wedding dress, but that’s a once in a lifetime deal.

I don’t get why people desire to spend such huge sums for clothing and accessories. I guess it’s a status thing. I like to look nice, but I don’t care about the name on the tag. I usually shop clearance racks, the outlet mall, or Gordman’s.

$600?

That's 30% more than I got.

She should be grateful.

The greatest country on earth is allowing itself to go down the tubes, IMO. We are losing our liberty, our schools can't teach, our infrastructure is crumbling and our politicians are nothing but preening, power-hungry crooks. I love this country, but I'm 64 years old and I've seen a lot of changes, none of them for the better.

I don’t think the Obama’s qualified for a Stimulus Check because of their income.

Sounds like a stupid made up story.

I agree there is much to be saddened about. However, there is a lot of good in the world as well. It just seems that “good” doesn’t have a good PR firm working for it!

“But it doesn't pay down every bill every month...” Ms. Obama apparently thinks it is the responsibility of the federal government to pay everyone's bill every month. Scary that people with such a shiftless, entitlement mentality could even THINK of occupying the White House.

True. There's an article around here somewhere about the Ronald Reagan Library will re-release some of his radio shows. Perhaps that will help.
