Banking on Becoming President The presidential field has dwindled significantly, but not before the candidates raised more than half a billion dollars in 2007. By some predictions, the eventual nominees will need to raise $500 million apiece to compete—a record sum. To find out where all this money is coming from, click on the candidates' names below and explore the options to the left. The candidates now file campaign finance reports monthly. The reports for May are due June 20th.

Democratic Candidates Candidate

TOTAL $$$$$ RAISED

OBAMA $265,439,277

Clinton $214,883,437

McCain, $96,654,783

------------------- MY COMMENTS --------------

Here is the bottom line folks... I would again encourage you ALL --- DO NOT SEND A PENNY TO THE RNC or McCain this ENTIRE ELECTION CYCLE ------ This is the ONLY way that we will be able to make the point that we NEED a more conservative candidate...

there is still time for McCain to step down and allow us to pick a candidate that is acceptable to the conservative base...

Why would he step down? Even if the stories about his ego aren't true, we have to face the fact he has won a majority of primary votes by a large margin. Yea it sucks, but that is life. We need to find a way to make the best of it by pushing for a Conservative VP choice and pressuring legislators on voting Conservative on individual issues.

sorry.. I can’t agree with you there.... we need a conservative on the TOP of the ticket and then we can “compromise” with a moderate VP... that is the way to unite the party.... I hate this rhetoric about vote for McCain because Obama is worse.. what kind of crappy campaign slogan is that...

Nice try. WTF is this, a college prank? It’s as if FR is being inundated with activist liberals posing as ordinary “concerned” citizens.

You have absolutely no knowledge of the hours and money I spent trying to get a very conservative candidate to the nomination.

However, unlike some misguided souls, I understand that I can’t win all battles, and I didn’t win this year.

McCain was absolutely not my choice for President, but I’ll vote for him in November because he’s the best left standing. To stay home (or pitch a hissy fit like the originator of this thread) is a waste of time.

And this year it could put a Marxist in the White House.

Barak is going to beat McCain. Why toss your vote for another loser instead of letting them know you’re sick of their RINO candidates

Yep. No point in encouraging the leftward swing of the GOP with no gain. Personally I want my enemy where I can see him rather than "watching my back". McCain will do more damage to conservatives than Obama ever could. Evidence of that is in the words of every McCain supporter who accepts every leftminded policy he promotes.

“My point in this is that there is still time for McCain to step down and allow us to pick a candidate that is acceptable to the conservative base”

That is not a point: that is a fantasyland.

I don’t like John McCain much, but I like him a little. That’s more than I can say for Barack Obama.

I am sick and tired of people like YOU, who try to tell us that McCain is worse or equal to Obama in order to scare us away in November from voting McCain, and thus are active Obama enablers.

No, there isn't. It's not going to happen.

We're either going to vote for McCain or let Obama take the presidency without any opposition from us.

Now THAT'S unacceptable.

.....I have concluded FR is a little over the top with demonizing McCain.....

It is not Free Republic, it is a few bitter conservatives, Harriet Christian type conservatives if you will, that place personal ego over rational thought.

We like to condemn liberals for being emotional rather than rational, but the same applies to many here. They prefer Obama to McCain because their ego described as core principles will not admit that the primaries are over, that a purist conservative was not nominated, and that they have in in effect declared themselves losers rather than admit it.

Yeah that's it. David is a liberal activist who just happened to "inundate" some 4 years before you showed up here.

Oh and here's your mug.

“he’s actually more progun than GWB and most of his positions on immigration.....are distorted here.”

Please, show us ONE distortion of McCain about immigration? Please. All I’ve seen is his record and quotes...like this one. The ONLY reason McCain has gotten this far is because the public doesn’t know yet what he is all about. But they will. Do you think the media will now keep his real record secret???

April, 2006 - SEN. JOHN MCCAIN (R), ARIZONA: “ My friends, I’ll offer anybody here $50 an hour if you’ll go pick lettuce in Yuma this season and pick for whole season. So — OK? Sign up. OK. When you sign up — you sign up, and you’ll be there for the whole season. The whole season, OK? Not just one day. Because you can’t do it, my friend. Sign up.”
(VIDEO CLIP) http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0604/13/ldt.01.html
NOTE: THOUSANDS of people signed up, they wrote McCain’s office. NO response.

McCain Supporters Farthest Off the Mark
WASHINGTON (March 31, 2007) – A new poll using neutral language finds that primary and caucus voters have little knowledge of candidates’ immigration positions. The results also show that voters often do not share their candidate’s position. * Only 34 percent of McCain voters, 42 percent of Clinton voters, and 52 percent of Obama voters correctly identified their candidate as favoring eventual citizenship for illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements.
* Of McCain voters, 35 percent mistakenly thought he favored enforcement that would cause illegals to return home, another 10 percent thought he wanted mass deportations, and 21 percent didn’t know his position.
* Voters often held different positions from the candidate they supported. Only 31 percent of McCain voters had the same immigration position as he does. For Clinton voters, 45 percent shared her position; 61 percent of Obama voters shared his position.

Great idea. It worked so well in 1992. And 1996. And 2006.

... we need a conservative on the TOP of the ticket and then we can “compromise” with a moderate VP...

Here is the challenge with this. First, we have to admit we are in a small minority. If we weren't, we wouldn't have McCain at the top of the ticket. Second, the VP slot represents a long term movement, what will Conservatives be for 2012 and beyond. McCain may be a temporary stop-gap for 2009 to 2012. Third, even if McCain steps down, the delegates already at the convention are pledged to McCain, and thus, would most likely put their vote in for a McCain light, someone we still wouldn't be satisfied with. That would also leave our side in chaos very close to the general election, not enough time to put a new campaign together. I agree, the rhetoric of 'vote for McCain because he isn't Obama' is lame, but let's be real, we are dealing with politicians, we always will vote for the lesser of two evils. Only once in a lifetime do you get a decent man on the top of the ticket. More often than not, it is just another career politician.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>..

Barack is going to win if people listen to guys like you and don’t bother to vote or send for mccain or the RNC, it then becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Yep, with people like you going around telling people not to vote for Mccain, you’re doing Obama’s work for him.
It was the people who voted in republican primaries who chose McCain. Too bad, too many of you didn’t like Rudy or Romney, and now we’re stuck with McCain.

Almost any other candidate I probably would. However, the more I hear about Obama, then the more concerned I am. Obama is a Marxist.

I am just not going to listen to McNut, and only vote for him in order to perserve our Capitalist system. I cannot stand McCain, but I fear Obama. It's a horrible way to look at things, but what choice do we have?
