As many of you know my wife just immigrated to the U.S. She is living in the Denver area and needs some help finding a job and social services. My mom is helping her but she is starting to get older and this is all new to her. So if any of you freepers live in the Denver area and can give her a hand let me know. I will be forever in your debt.

If she’s your wife why does she need social services?

Sorry I don’t live in CO but perhaps she could sign up at a Temp Agency until she finds something. Good luck and please welcome her for us.

I don’t want to be dense but I am confused by the post.
Is she your wife? and if so why does she need government help?
If she is someone else wife again why does she need government help?
If she is just looking for a job go to any temp agency to get her foot in the door or monster.com or any online job search engine.
I was unsure if it is your wife getting to old or you mom.

Probably not social services as in cash but social services as English speaking courses. Believe it or not, there *are* immigrants that want to integrate into American society and not suck off the government teat and send the extra cash back home. Really. I swear.

OK, I have had to return to China for a while. I am not saying my wife needs government assistance. I thought maybe someone in Denver knew of a good job service or even needed an employ. My wife just moved to the U.S. with my 2 year old son. I unfortunately have to spend some time wrapping up business in China. Could take up to a year. She is living with my mother who is getting old.

My wife has a degree in Translation. Her English is great but she is being told by everyone that your just an immigrant why cant you just get a job at a Chinese restaurant. Not asking for any handouts just think that my wives skills are better then service soda pop at a Chinese buffet for 1 dollar an hour.

Thanks for any help/advice that is given

Sorry to bother.

No bother I was just confused.
Ok, you do know that she would get at least min wage which is higher than $1 per hour.
Have her look on monster.com or other employment internet search engine.
I would first look at the county or state job postings to see if they are looking for translators.
I do not know where she is applying for jobs where she is being treated so badly but I am sorry for that.
She could even apply at places like Target or KMart retail outlet always need people. I am in retail (not Colorado) but we accept every application because the tern over is so great.
Good luck and keep me informed.

Probably not the best job, but most call centers would love to have someone who can speak Chinese. It is better than a restaurant! As long as she is legally here and to be hired I would think that companies would fall over themselves to hire her. Good luck!

Ni hao Brad! Glad to hear your wife and son made it safely to the US...:)

I’d recommend she polish up her resume a bit and approach law firms as well as the DA’s office. Both could use translator skills, as well as a sharp mind like she has!

You could also contact Jessica - she might have some ideas. Her friend Grace is living in New York, but has gainful employment.

Rest,

Brad’s a great FReeper, and he’s doing the right thing helping his wife (yes, WIFE) LEGALLY immigrate to the US. He’s asking for his community to help, and she wants to work. This isn’t someone bouncing to the US to “suck on the bennies” - they’re solid folk looking to do what it takes to succeed. Cut him some slack...

Have her check and see if there are any jobs in the court system as a translator. Please tell her that my family and I welcome her to our country. It sounds like she is exactly the kind of people we need here!!!

I agree that is a racist stereotype to believe that is the only sort of work someone would be qualified for (and ironically, it wouldn't even be of much help these days... around these parts much of the kitchen staff at Chinese restaurants are hispanic and the radio stations they play in the back are the tip off).

I’ve seen several jobs under “legal” help wanted (not in the Colorado area, though) listed on Craig’s List requesting/requiring someone who speaks Chinese/English.

Please give her our warmest welcome to the U.S.

Without knowing her skill set, I don’t know what avenues to suggest you check. But there are some online job listings at Monster.com as others have said (I’ve never used them and suggest checking several such sites).

There are probably a couple of directions you can take this, employment working with people who cannot communicate in Chinese (for instance those seeking adoption of a Chinese baby, obviously at an agency) and those who’ve immigrated to America and need help with English.

But there are probably online job listings that have foreign language skill requirements.

Good luck in your search.

She might try sending an application to IBM.

She will probably do best to give Mandarin Chinese lessons. I paid a fortune for mine.

...alternatively, if she has the proper certs, perhaps she could approach a local college or even community college and offer to start up a Chinese language program?

Just a thought. Lots of people would love to learn Chinese... me included. I now don't have much time, but continue to learn sporadically.

Please welcome your wife to America. Best of luck!
