More Hollywood Lies: Stop-Loss Hits Theaters, Flops
Right Up Front ^

Have you ever heard or seen something that sped up your heartrate and gave you that fight-or-flight adrenaline rush just because it was such a blatant and poisonously lie? It enraged you because even though you knew it was clearly a lie, other people right around you didn't know better and probably ate it up? That's how I felt two months ago when I sat in a Manhattan movie theater packed with left-wing yuppies and the preview for Stop-Loss, which opened this weekend, flickered on the screen.

The premise of the movie is this: Army war hero and small-town everyman (played by left-wing actor Ryan Phillipe) returns triumphantly from Iraq at the end of his enlistment ready to settle down and pursue the American dream with his equally blonde high school sweetheart (typecast Hollywood protagonists always have two things in common: blonde hair and democrat voting records). But wait a second there, heroic young American. Bush and his blood-and-oil-thirsty gang of neo-con fascist Republicans have other plans -- you've been stop-lossed! Oh, snap! Or so say the Hollywood liberals.

Stop Loss did about twice as good as ‘Run Fatboy Run’ on a per screen basis, about half as much as ‘21’, probably will end the weekend at about 3.2 million, give or take, which isn't horrible; that'll happen next weekend.

I heard a blurb from “Stop Loss” on National Proletariat Radio yesterday. It sounded like a high schooler had written the script. It was so mechanically anti-American that it was laughable.

And Hollywood keeps saying that these movies keep failing because, “No one is interested in Iraq.”

If they actually made a movie about our troops fighting, say the Battle of Falluja, I'm certain it would be a blockbuster.

I’d go see a pro-troops iraq movie

Umm, Run, Fatboy, Run was not heavily promoted and mostly only people familiar with Simon Pegg would have known about it (which is why I saw it on Friday night). Stop-Loss was heavily promoted and may finish out of the top 5 and do worse than Shutter, which is in its third week. Plus, the Stop-Loss budget was much, much larger than what it will bring in. It's a Flop...

A movie based on Marcus Luttrell and Operation Redwing would be a definite winner in my estimation.

I just say this tonight on base. The movie theater was packed, but I thought the movie was boring especially the end when the main character did not get punished for doing some bad things (don’t want to give away the movie). He was an E-6 at the beginning of the movie and an E-6 at the end.
