I am attempting to find a US Government source for the number of small and medium business in the US. I have gone to the US Dept of Commerce site with little luck. Can someone point me to a useful URL that would provide any kind of useful and "official" numbers (even estimates) that would allow me to be able to assert the following:

Total number of SMBs for 2000 through 2006 or 2007 Number of SMBs for the each year per state

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Computers/Internet; Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: business; statistics; us
If possible, I would also like a site that can tell me the number of IT consultants in the US, even if that information is extrapolated. Resources for this level of detail seem to be thin on the Internet.

You might try the Small Business Administration website, though I don’t know that you’ll find any one website with all the info you’re seeking. Good luck.

Start with NAICS
http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics02/

drilldown hypertext and find what job calssification you’re looking for.

you can then go buy business intelligence reports for employment via NAICS code, though it is expensive to do it nationwide, I’m not sure if that info would be publicly available without travelling to a library and doing footwork to collect info.

As someone else said, the SBA has info on the number of small businesses in a county and some of their database is separated by NAICS codes, but it won’t have number of employees per employer, nor individuals not incorporated nor large employers, nor government workers.

Found what you are looking for the geogrpahic region of the Research Triangle in NC: http://eslmi23.esc.state.nc.us/ew/EWSZNAICS.asp?Report=1&Year=2005&Period=02&stfips=37&area=000007&AreaType=08&AreaTyName=Research+Triangle+Regional+Partnership Select Ownership Type: Aggregate

Select Industry NAICS Level: Industry group (4 digit) from the drop down to start,

Use 4 digit code 5112 to start.

Use the NIACS codes from my prior post to narrow down to 5 or 6 digit NAICS codes to get closer.

You want to search the www.bls.gov Current Employment Statistics report, which is one of the databases used in the employment/unemployment figures released by the Federal government.

http://www.bls.gov/data/home.htm

and specifically:

Google "IRS section 1706" and you'll find out why. A nation full of self-employed IT people? Well, the usual suspects just found that concept too horrifying to tolerate. ;)
