McCain & Huckabee - The Deal Has Been Made

Posted on 01/20/2008 3:14:06 PM PST by Y-Man

"Brokered" Convention? The "brokering" has already taken place.

It seems to me that the evidence overwhelmingly points to Cain and Huck having made a pact together. Neither has a chance alone - only together can they pull enough combined support to get one (AKA both) of them a shot at high executive positions after this election.

Together they can effectively deny enough delegates to Romney, Thompson, or Giuliani. Neither Cain nor Huck will end up with a majority going to the convention - until the other consents to be VP or whatever post is offered. It will be a "brokered" convention - between Cain and Huck.

And then the Cain/Huck ticket will die and be remembered as a gift from one party to another.

My humble, personal opinion - that's what we're facing here.

Unless we want it to come down to this, we better get enough support to one of the other guys to enable a majority.

Shoot, flame, whatever away...

I disagree.

The only pact they have is one of circumstance — not to run a negative campaign.

A pledge they both made individually, so the appearance is they are in cahoots.

A scary thought. Considering their amnesty position, they might have the same handlers.

Scary indeed.

It would be funny to see how badly they loose in the general election though, the GOP thinks they can’t win without latinos and evangelicals...just wait till the conservatives sit it out.

“And then the Cain/Huck ticket will die and be remembered as a gift from one party to another.”

I think that a McCain/Huckabee ticket is a distinct possibility...have been saying so for many weeks.

However, it is a logical development, not some conspiracy between the two. If you are looking for wacko conspiracies then go to Roswell with aluminum foil on your head. If you are looking for a more realistic conspiracy, then concentrate on the mormon connection with Romney.

In the mean time, stop being so defeatist. McCain/Huckabee may actually be a winning ticket. Just because so many here are enamored with Fred and Duncan, doesn’t mean the average GOP voter is. Plus, there is a crossover appeal to independents and conservative Dems with McCain/Huckabee.

Hey, it isn’t perfect, but one seldom gets all they want. Ok, now is the time for the koolaid drinkers to start saying they would stay home or vote third party (yada, yada, yada) before they would support such a ticket. Of course those same people have been screaming for months about RINOS. It is time to grow up and stop being cry baby losers. Fred has lost and should bow out with class like Duncan did. Being a “spoiler” is not a class thing to do.

Please give us your evidence. Do you have any proof or are you just guessing?

Thanks for your polite response.

For one - I obviously am more wary of Huckabee than you are.

I believe the evidence from the debates and "off-the-record comments that made the record" proves that the two are overly polite to each other and instead focus on the other candidates.

Perhaps their campaigns have been relatively free of "attack ads" - but they're the ones who benefitted from the Media's creation of that very term and tried to use it against one of their main rivals. (By the way - right up McCain's liberal "Campaign Reform" ideals) Also:

Huck's "I pulled it before you saw it" Iowa shenanigan
McCain's unprofessional and immature behavior in the debates (example: New Hampshire - vs. Romney)
Huck's immature dismissal of his resounding defeat in the one debate Thompson did well in (Metamucil)

I believe these to be very negative. Apparently to Cain and Huck "negative" only means in advertising that your opponent actually airs on the TV.

The joined together to get Mitt.
That is their objective...blabbing about his negative campaigning when they themselves do more of it. Showing the differences in policy is not negative.

McKennedy is a disaster.
Huck is a Huckster.

I can’t vote for either.

I believe you made some assumptions about my political leanings - most of them missed the mark I can tell you.

However - two things in your response I have to point out.

One - obviously you are more into conspiracy theories and tinfoil than I am. Nowhere did I call Cain/Huck a "conspiracy". I just pointed it out. You, however, really believe in some Mormon/Romney conspiracy. I think that is absurd. Nothing personal, just my opinion about the idea.

Two - Defeatist? You haven't a clue how non-defeatist my intent was in the post.

I do agree with you on the "I'm gonna go third party" or "I'm gonna stay home" position. I believe it's forsaking the responsibility to choose the best (or least-worst) of the real options presented. Ross Perot voters gave Bill Clinton victories in '92 and '96. Not that I didn't like Ross and no offense to those who voted for him, but voting for him allowed Clinton to squeak in (and now we have to deal with Hillary because of it.)

Huckabee has been pretty consistent about life and guns his entire political career.

If I were looking for those who’d trade those 2 principles for political expediency, I’d look to Rudy McRomney.

Agreed - those are two of his strong points - and VERY important ones.

However, there are many that hold strongly those positions - Ron Paul for one. My kids hold those positions too. The Presidency of the United States requires a lot more than that. Unfortunately, we have no single contender that fills all ideals.

Because of his other weaknesses (I'm not gonna elaborate - I think it's been said plenty on other threads) I believe Huckabee, despite his admirable position on two of the key issues, is not qualified for the job, or the backup job for that matter.

My point (of using the word “disciple”) is that some of the Fred supporters here express a level of fervor/devotion befitting a deity.

Makes about as much sense as McCain asking Kerry to be his running mate. IMHO, McCain will do what he believes is necessary to win ... and tell you to stay out of his way!
