Just got back from the Middlesex County GOP Convention where the featured event was a Presidential Preference poll. Dan Gallic covered the Congressional and Senate candidate speeches that were made.
This is my District, so I wasnt there as a blogger, but as a participant in the poll and the Congressional race to replace Mike Ferguson affects me as well.
I thought Marty Marks did a great job and gave a fantastic speech, very conservative on the issues. Of the two bigger name candidates and probably least conservative of them all, Leonard Lance and Kate Whitman, Whitman surprised me by hitting on many conservative points and issues. A lot better than I expected, certainly not where I would want her to be, but not bad. Leonard Lance needs to much work and has been on the wrong side of to many issues to win my support or vote. But more on this race as the June primary gets closer.
As far as the Presidential Preference poll goes, there were about 225-250 in attendance when the event started, but by the time the voting came, we were down to about 170 votes counted. To vote, you were to choose your 1st choice and 2nd choice for President.
1st Choice
38% Rudy Giuliani 16% Fred Thompson 15% John McCain 12% Mitt Romney 11% Ron Paul 5% Mike Huckabee 5% Duncan Hunter
2nd Choice
27% John McCain 22% Fred Thompson 17% Mitt Romney 12% Rudy Giuliani 8% Ron Paul 8% Mike Huckabee 6% Duncan Hunter
Notes: This is a HUGE change from the same convention last year in March, where Rudy Giuliani finished with over 60% or so of the vote. Fred Thompsons campaign was the most visible at the event, followed by Romney. Surprisingly, Ron Paul did not have the visible support that you usually see or hear about. His votes came from Middlesex County Committeemen, party establishment activists. Even at 11% many people were surprised at that number. Duncan Hunter did remarkably well for someone who did not make the ballot for the February 5th primary.

Thanks for your efforts. Thank God NJ will not be selecting the Predsident.
We have an impressive republican underbelly. It is just that our elections are very, hmmmm, stinky.
Our state was investigated federally for using a “legacy” system with dead voters and people that have long moved away.
But our political system is set up to keep the criminals in office.
If we ever get a foot in, the state will be turned around fast.
The Christie Todd Whitman might make a comeback? LOL
Do you ever get the feeling of despair in trying to change things?
Yes, her daughter is running for Congress. No, I didn’t believe a word of her claims that she is more conservative than her mom.
Yes, especially since the courts allowed Corzine to run on the “legacy” system.
I totally missed this thread, thanks for all your hard work, Calpernia!
I was proud and honored to speak on behalf of Duncan Hunter!
Larry Pratt of Gun Owners of America was just on a regional radio program praising Duncan Hunter on the 2nd amendment. Sounds like he prefers Hunter to the rest!
Did you put in a plug for your freeper buddies?
He has written very favorably. We should contact him and ask him to make a formal endorsement.
Sorry, no I didn’t. We had a time allotment for speaking.
Gee, thanks alot! /s
