This is not conservatism. Mike Huckabee is a pro-life, pro-family values liberal. He is soft on illegal immigration and he is enthusiastic about passing laws that control the way people live their lives (e.g, laws against smoking, junk food, etc.).
Yes, Huckabee's pro-life, and if he was the best Republican option, I'd hold my nose and vote for him, but he's not the best the Republicans have to offer. He's not the only pro-life candidate, either...
I think Fred Thompson is the most conservative of the viable pro-life candidates. All the others are much more moderate. I'll admit, Thompson isn't as conservative as I'd like, but of the viable candidates, he's the most conservative and he has the most conservative record. He's pro-life and has been endorsed by The National Right to Life Committee.
Fred Thompson does beat Hillary in polls for the general election, and if he is chosen as the candidate, the party will unify behind him (except for the bitter, anti-war hold-outs in the Ron Paul gang, what they'll do is anyone's guess).

It takes one to know one, right?
Huckleberry on lead guitar, Slick Willy on sax, Monica on flute, oops sorry.
Now, why would any man develop a conscience that thinks it's okay to take money from industrious and hardworking people to hand it over to interlopers and law-breakers?
If he would just sell his soul for a pair...
That being stated, I much prefer Fred Thompson. It's time to abandon RINOs and get behind Fred if we are to have a nominee that doesn't have liberal tenancies.
Fred Thompson is the only candidate talking seriously about reforming government spending policies and coming to grips with the ongoing expansion of federal entitlement programs. Fred`s a fiscal conservative who has offered detailed proposals to meet the challenges of big government head on.
Well, they are non-believers in Christ. Now it is true that they’re practicing the only faith other than Christianity authored by God, but note that Jesus didn’t hold back from giving the Scribes and Pharisees a good dressing down when they needed it.
What a Huckster! Gag alert. Having somebody like him running is embarassing.
So you have no problem with Huckabee being pro-illegal alien.
The only thing Huck is conservative on are guns, gays and abortion, but so is Romney.
Romney is much better on immigration and on controling spending. He actually managed to cut billions from the state budget in liberal Massachusetts.
Huckabee's record as governor on fiscal issues is to the left of Bill Clinton's.
At least, he is geniunely socially conservative and comes off as far more honest.
No politician is completely genunine about anything. I don't know about you, but I care less about what's in a politicians heart than what he will actually do when he's in office. Even if you don't believe Romney's pro-life conversion is genuine (and I do believe it), there is no way he could get away with changing his position again. It would be political suicide for him.
And his record in MA shows very clearly that when it comes to actions that have real policy implications, he has consistently been pro-marriage and pro-life.
I would tend to believe he would be like Bush in that he would follow through on his campaign promises and he has strongly supported tax reform,
Yeah, but a man who can't understand why it's a bad idea to subsidize tuition for illegal aliens can't be trusted to cut spending. And in the long run, tax cuts without spending cuts are unsustainable.
Apparently, you can't read because I didn't say that. I stated that Giuliani, Romney and Huckabee are all equally bad on the issue, But, that Huckabee, at least, is a social conservative and comes off as honest. I trust Huckabee to keep his campaign promises while I don't trust Romney or Giuliani to.
If you're comment on what I write, then don't misrepresent what my beliefs.
Not true. Huckabee and Giuliani are equally bad, but Romney is a solid conservative on this issue.
Who was it who vetoed in-state tuition for illegals? Who authorized MA state police to enforce immigration laws? Who wants to deny federal funds to sanctuary cities? Who staunchly opposes any path to citizenship for illegals?
But, that Huckabee, at least, is a social conservative and comes off as honest.
He's no more a social conservative than Romney.
As to honesty, name a single campaign promise Romney failed to keep. When Mitt makes a promise, he keeps it.
If that's not honesty, I don't know what is.
On a world-scale, of course, it's not. Most of the world is far worse than a Mexican pigsty and the majority of people would feel privileged to be allowed to live there ~
Huckabee, "W", Giuliani, etc. aren't so "liberal" on the issue as they are "ignorant".
The Democrats, though, are simply evil when it comes to illegal aliens. They want to keep those poor people in this country to use as some sort of slave class for an indefinite period.
That's true nationally, but it may not be true in Iowa. I hope it is; then Romney can take the Huckster down by pounding away on the issue.
But I'm worried that may not be enough to take out the socialist.
Lots of people don’t have the slightest idea what real Evangelicals think about what Jews might believe.
I recognize that illegal immigration is a huge issue to most on this board, but it’s not critical for me. I want a candidate who at minimum will prosecute the war against the Islamofascist terrorists, will appoint the most originalist pro-life Justices possible to vacancies on the Supreme Court of the United States, and will limit entitlements and spending thereupon as much as politically possible. Those criteria rule out any Democrats, Ron Paul, and Rudolph Giuliani. Romney’s recent pro-life conversion and health care boondoggle in Massachusetts lead me to search for other candidates. John McCain isn’t a serious candidate given his collapse in the polls to sixth behind Ron Paul and probably stands the least chance to win.
I’ve parked in Huckabee’s camp long before he was popular primarily because he possesses the executive experience that the other candidates lack. Huckabee is admittedly disturbingly weak on fiscal issues. We unfortunately lack a large repertoire of successful strong conservative governors, and some like Mark Sanford (South Carolina) declined to run. Fred Thompson seems solid but relatively unaccomplished.
This philosophy is the ESSENCE of George W. Bush-Compassionate Conservatism! We are in deep shit if this wins in November. Our country cannot stand another four or eight years of unfettered illegal immigration. We will be TOTALLY overrun! This must be stopped!
A nation being attacked from external armies is not the only way nation's have fallen.
Mix one part Jimmy Carter, one part Bill Clinton, one part Vincente Fox, one part “compassionate conservative”, one part Gomer Pyle and one part televangelist, mix well and you have Mike “Open Borders for Jesus” Huckabee!!
