“Goodbye Sam Brownback, Hero of the Social Conservative Movement: Where Else is There to Turn?”

by SK Johnson 10-18-07

Originally from www.dhgrassrevolt.wordpress.com

At the outset I will make my confession. I am a volunteer with the Duncan Hunter for President campaign and closely connected to the grassroots movement for Duncan Hunter. Yes, at the core, this article is an attempt at solicitation but it comes from a place of common ground. It comes from our common ground on the importance of the pro-life, human trafficking, and the social conservative and human rights platform at large. This is not merely an attempt to show that you should support my candidate, but to come together and have a dialog about where to go from here, and how we can best continue the fight for what we believe in. I hope you will join in and listen and participate.

Sam Brownback has been labeled the ‘William Wilberforce’ candidate of this election. I can understand this label. Mr. Brownback has stood strong for many important human rights issues with the spirit of moral, Christian conviction that drove William Wilberforce to scream freedom-fighting words in parliament to end the slave trade in Great Britain.

Sam Brownback has stood strong on the issue of human trafficking. Although William Wilberforce helped bring down the slave trade in Great Britain 200 years ago, millions of men, women, and children are sent into slave conditions including children workers, sex slaves as young as 9 or 10, and workers in abominable conditions with no pay. This happens every day all over the world. It is one of the greatest abominations of our age, and deserves our time, energy, and passion just as Sam Brownback has given it.

Sam Brownback has been a hero of the pro-life movement, once again with William Wilberforce as his “model”. I agree wholeheartedly with Senator Brownback when he states the following about Wilberforce: “If he were alive today, one of the greatest causes he would take up is the cause of human dignity and that applies to the child in the womb,” The pro-life movement is crucial to our times, and it is a cause we should, in the words of Winston Churchill, “Never never never never never never… give up.” Senator Brownback has also said the following: “I believe Roe v. Wade will be overturned because it’s not the right way to go — because it treats human life as a piece of property. It was wrong then and it’s wrong now.” According to some statistics that I have seen, our country has aborted more human beings than the human beings slaughtered by Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin COMBINED. These are the things that make it hard for me to sleep at night, as it should for all of us.

When I started looking for a candidate to support in this election, I confess that I bypassed supporting Sam Brownback and threw my hat in with Duncan Hunter because he stood for many things I believed to be important, and he stood for them with conviction, passion, and perseverance. Yet I can see now that Sam Brownback added something very important to the dialog concerning the human rights platform and it is sad to hear that he will be announcing a drop from the race in the coming days. I will be sad to see him go.

Yes, I understand why Sam Brownback has been labeled the William Wilberforce candidate. His strong conviction has driven him to support and stand up for so many issues important to our current age. I can not say that I agree with Sam Brownback on every issue, but when it comes to human rights issues such as abortion and human trafficking I believe we are right in step (from the limited amount of information I have about him). William Wilberforce is one of my heroes, and I have prayed that God would raise up another just like him to fight for the issues of human trafficking and abortion most specifically. I do not claim that any current candidate to be the next Wilberforce, but I have seen his spirit reside in Sam Brownback as well as Duncan Hunter.

Now that Sam Brownback is preparing to end his campaign, I want to take a moment to share why I have supported Duncan Hunter for the same reasons that I believe many have supported Sam Brownback. He has the spirit of William Wilberforce. He has stood strong for important issues with passion, conviction, and perseverance.

Communist China is well known for its violations of human rights. Although the PRC’s (People’s Republic of China) Constitution promises free speech, yet the reality is that those who attempt to speak out against the governmet are threatened, interrogated, and detained. China is a death-trap for missionaries and Christian pastors because of the strict bans on all religious freedom. China is known for its ill-treatment and even torture of detained prisoners. There are almost no legal safeguards to support fair trials and due process. Thousands have been incarcerated in Tibet by China for their religious beliefs. China allows men to buy women as wives which has created a breeding ground for immense growth in the Chineese human trafficking market. Furthermore, China enacts mandated family planning and government forced abortions, particularly for female children. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Many politicans have stood strong in denying trade with China, especially increased and Most Favored Nation status trade with China because of their human rights violations. Duncan Hunter is one of those people. He has been diametrically opposed to unnecessary trade with China and in support of trade deals that limit trade with China, an enemy of the United States. Congressman Hunter has also stood strong against our current trade deals with China because they are stealing American jobs and paying the Chinese to build up their military with information they have stolen from hacks on our Pentagon computers and spies in our nuclear facilities. Congressman Hunter was against Most Favored Nation statues with China from the start, predicting the problems it would create. (As a side note: John McCain and Fred Thompson both supported giving China this trade status).

Human Trafficking has become an important issue in the United States. There is research going on to see if our current free trade policies, particularly NAFTA and CAFTA, have lead to any of the rise in trafficking in the United States. Illegal Immigrants are coming over the border and sent into poor, low-paying, working conditions or sold into slavery. The slave market in the United States has been growing. Duncan Hunter has been against these trade deals, and has stood as the leader for border enforcement both for the sake of our country and for the sake of those who die or who are sent into slavery when coming across. Hunter has also stood strong in opposing alliances with countries with human rights violations such as Dubai.

Congressman Hunter has been the author (I believe at least 5 times) of the ‘Life at Conception Act’ which is an act that, if passed, would define life as beginning at conception. If that happened, the 14th amendment would apply to protecting the lives of the unborn. An admission made by the court in their Roe v. Wade ruling.

The arguments and beliefs that fueled the abolition movement are fundamental to the pro-life movement. That is why I have a problem with people like Giuliani, Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney, and Ron Paul who advocate that abortion should be a state issue. It is an issue that goes to the core of our Constitutional, foundational beliefs. Duncan Hunter, like Sam Brownback, understands this.

Congressman Hunter has said this, “The Founding Fathers developed these [First Amendment] clauses to guarantee the right of all citizens to worship and to protect the church from the state, not to strip religion from the everyday lives of Americans. “

The following is a description of the Right to Life bill which he authored:

For more than thirty years, nine unelected men and women on the Supreme Court have played God with innocent human life.

The result has been a brutal holocaust that has claimed the lives of more than 45 million innocent and helpless unborn children in America.

In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling forced abortion-on-demand down our nation’s throat.

As a result, many pro-lifers resigned themselves to protecting a life here and there — passing laws which slightly control abortion in the most outrageous cases. And other pro-life organizations always tiptoed around the Supreme Court, hoping they wouldn’t be offended.

Life at Conception Act Follows the High Court’s Instructions To Define When Life Begins

Now the time to grovel before the Supreme Court is over.

Working from what the Supreme Court ruled in Roe, pro-life lawmakers can pass a Life at Conception Act and end abortion by using the Constitution instead of amending it.

A simple majority vote is all that is needed to pass a Life at Conception Act as opposed to the two-thirds required to add a Constitutional amendment.

When the Supreme Court handed down its now-infamous Roe v. Wade decision, it did so based on a new, previously undefined “right of privacy” which it “discovered” in so-called “emanations” of “penumbrae” of the Constitution.

Of course, as constitutional law it was a disaster. But never once did the Supreme Court declare abortion itself to be a Constitutional right.

Instead the Supreme Court said:

“We need not resolve the difficult question of when life begins . . . the judiciary at this point in the development of man’’s knowledg, is not in a position to speculate as to the answer.”

Representative Duncan Hunter’s (R-CA) Life at Conception Act [H.R. 618] was introduced in the House of Representatives on the 34th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, January 22, 2007, with a record 64 original cosponsors.

Congressman Hunter has also been a hero for the religious freedom cause, having worked hard to protect religious symbols under attack by the ACLU. Most specifically, he worked for what was supposed to be a lost cause to save a monument in a Veteran’s cemetery in his district that was deemed ‘an infringement upon the separation of church and state’. His bill to rescue the monument passed although it was expected to fail.

Duncan Hunter did not gain his positions as a result of this election like some other candidates have. If you study his record you can see it to be consistent, clear, and convicted without a single blemish. The writer Alexander J. Madison has written a series of articles about Duncan Hunter’s record on important issues as a result of the hours of study he has put into researching Duncan Hunter’s voting record as well as the records of other candidates. His articles can be found on my website (The Duncan Hunter Grass Revolt: www.dhgrassrevolt.wordpress.com) or (www.newswichcannotlose.blogspot.com).

Congressman Hunter has perfect ratings from the National Right to Life, the Eagle Forum, Concerned Women for America, and Americans for Better Immigration. He has been supported by Ann Coulter, and Michael Reagan (son of Ronald Reagan). Individuals such as Tony Perkins (of the Family Research Council), Neil Bortz, Phyllis Schlafly, and Mark Levin have indicated that Duncan is currently their favorite candidate.

Duncan Hunter is a William Wilberforce like hero of the issues so many convicted individuals hold to. We will be judged one day for our actions, and I believe we may even one day be judged on the basis of the votes we cast. I hope you will join me in supporting him, as we fight side by side for every fellow man’s God-given rights. We will not sit still, we will not be quiet in the eyes of the injustice that we see around us. Join me in fighting against it.

“Your hands are full of blood;

wash and make yourselves clean.

Take your evil deeds

out of my sight

Stop doing wrong,

learn to do right!

Seek justice,

encourage the oppressed. ” -Isaiah 1:16-17

“And, sir, when we think of eternity, and of the future consequences of all human conduct, what is there in this life that should make any man contradict the dictates of his conscience, the principles of justice, the laws of religion, and of God?” -William Wilberforce

No doubt that the Brownback supporters should gravitate to Duncan Hunter.

Duncan is my man.

I like Tancredo pretty well too -- but I hope he drops out, and that his supporters move to Hunter. The media tries really hard to ignore Hunter, but if he starts getting these supporters, he may become harder to ignore.

Wobbly on Iraq... falling-down-stupid on illegals. If you can’t be solid on both of these issues... you don’t belong in the race and you need to be replaced by someone who is.

I think they'll split. Two will go to Hunter and two to Huckabee.

It’s pretty unlikely that many of the second tier supporters will go to a top tier candidate who is saying whatever his advisers tell him to say.

Hunter on the other hand has a long held firm stance that isn’t simply to get elected. He doesn’t have to reform his opinions for every new audience. I also think Hunter stands the best chance against the democrats. There’s little if anything the democrats can use against him and he offers a very clear choice.

Sounds reasonable. I don't think many Freepers will go to Huckabee just because he is not a financial conservative or libertarian.

I agree. Maybe some of the core or inner group of Brownback supporters who were with him because they knew him, but otherwise they will likely go to Duncan Hunter.

Mark likes Duncan, as I do, but has all but endorsed FRed as matter of viability.

And once Duncan Hines and Huggabee drops out those votes will also go to FRed as well.

Mark Levin has said no such thing. Ever.

Congressman Hunter has been on Mark's show and Mark was extremely warm to him. Ditto for Romney and Fred Thompson. However Mark has repeatedly said he is endorsing NO ONE specific at this point.

Facts would help a lot.

I also support DH.

In person Brownback comes across as a humble farmer who pokes fun at his own career as an attorney. He's an entertaining engaging pol who encourages audiences to chant along as he rhythmically delivers the mother of all tongue twisters that he learned at auctioneer school.

I suspect that Cargill and Archers Daniel Midland, who employ countless illegal aliens to operate most of the grain elevators in Kansas, twisted Brownback's arm to make him play along with their amnesty gambit.
