LA Officials Authorize Homeless “Squatters’ Rights”

The Los Angeles City Council has approved an ordinance that awards the homeless so-called “squatters rights” to city sidewalks between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The action resolves a lawsuit filed in 2003 by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of six homeless people who wanted an injunction against a 1968 law that prohibited people from sleeping on sidewalks. Police stopped enforcing the law after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in 2006 that the law was a violation of the 8th Amendment’s ban against “cruel and unusual punishments” and said the law couldn't be implemented as long as there is a shortage of beds to accommodate the city's homeless population.

“By rights, the city should be providing comfortable, convenient and secure housing for these people,” said ACLU spokesman Bertram Petty. “Allowing them to campout on the sidewalks is the least they can do.”

The new ordinance also allows the homeless to urinate and defecate on the streets until “appropriate and commodious facilities are made available.” This proviso is said to be modeled on San Francisco’s “sit/sh*t” ordinance.

“These people have nowhere else to go,” Petty asserted. “Those who profess to be offended can simply avert their gaze.”

My wife and I recently headed to Seattle for the last game in the Indians vs Mariners series at Safeco Field. We took the opportunity to head down to Pike Street Market before the game, and happened acoss one of Seattle’s much daunted automatic public toilets.

I was not at all surprized at the number of derelicts and human debris that are attracted to that area, and as we were standing at one of the vendors, some derelict sauntered over to the very prominent stainless steel toilet facility, walked behind it, whipped it out and relieved himself against the side of it in broad daylight.

So much for spending public funds to try and accommodate the so-called homeless...

Someone let “Sam the Tram” Adams know that he is seriously behind LA on this, and Portland has some catching up to do.

God forbid that SoCal out-Liberal the People’s Republik Of Portland on an issue like this!!

There was a recent article in the S.F. Chronicle which had about a thousand comments about people getting fed up with the sit/$hit bums that have infested the city. But in the end they will vote for the same liberals who created the "progressive" policies in the first place. Nothing will be done to stop the bums in the liberal cities.
