Yeah, but when Fred says it, it makes more sense and it connects with more people (doesn't appear scripted and written by a speech-writer).

Fred's biggest appeal to the un-decided is his guy-next-door plain talk. His standing will go up as the issues become discussed (in due time), and he's been astute enough to avoid getting into the fray while people could still care less about thinking about November '08, which is more than a year away.

He'll be there when the others have run out of money, and run out of support from people who tire of their rhetoric.

As far as "the line" you say Romney used, it doesn't work for him in his position, as well as it does for Fred. A joke from Helen Thomas doesn't carry the same weight as a joke from Laura Ingram.
