In response to a reporter's question, GOP Prez candidate Fred Thompson said he would not rule out drilling for oil off Florida to achieve more energy independence.
"We've got to use all the resources that are available to us," he said. "We ought to do it in an environmentally safe manner. We've got to be respectful and inclusive of the people who are most directly involved in the area. But I would not rule out our Gulf areas in terms of that if we've got resources there."
Thompson also said on the stump in Cape Coral, where more than 500 showed up in Jaycees Park on the Caloosahatchee River, that he would like to have more nuclear and so-called "clean-coal" technology used. He said he would drill for oil in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge.

When asked about putting up windmills that might obstruct Ted Kennedy’s view at Cape Cod Thompson said: “Hell, I’ll put up so many windmills at Cape Cod it’ll look like a mosquito swarm.”

There's quite a gulf (pardon the pun) between the headline -- "Thompson would oil-drill off Florida" -- and what Fred actually said -- "But I would not rule out our Gulf areas in terms of that if we've got resources there."

It’s up to Congress or whoever owns the oil patch.

Its up to Congress or whoever owns the oil patch.Let's be clear about that: if GWB had forced the issue in his first two years, it would have happened. But, of course, his brother seems to have vetoed that effort.

LOL! Kennedy is such a hypocrite. Just one more reason to vote for Fred, since I could almost hear him saying that.

Yet another reason why I don’t want to hear the name “Bush” bandied about as a possible presidential candidate ever again.
To: trisham
Who knows? He just MIGHT say something like that!

The President might be autocratic for a while, but nobody would put up with it for long. The President has surprisingly little real power outside his Executive Branch. He can nominate for the USSC, which is his major power of lasting significance. Rather than ask how a Candidate would treat a specific issue we ought to see how he goes about making decisions and what his depth of understanding of the USA might be.

It works for me. When it comes to war and defunding OPEC everyone has to pitch in and that includes the blue hairs from the North Atlantic Seaboard.

Bother to look at the votes in Congress on this issue? Contrary to the wishful thinking of the Dinocons, Congress is no more likely to pass this under a Thompson Presidency.
