A really nice little article has come to our attention at NWCL. Duncan Hunter has been working hard for America for many years, despite the opposition, both Democrat and Republican.
AN ALIEN IDEA : DENYING WELFARE BENEFITS TO LEGAL IMMIGRANTS IS UNFAIR
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (PA)
January 15, 1995
Just two days after Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich backed back away from a proposal to make legal immigrants ineligible for welfare benefits, a GOP lawmaker introduced legislation to do just that.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Duncan Hunter of California , would bar legal immigrants from receiving food stamps, housing assistance, Supplemental Security Income and Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Immigrants would have three years to become citizens or lose their benefits.
Earlier, Mr. Gingrich, declaring that he was "very pro-legal immigration," had said that the plan, which was written into the GOP's Contract with America , would have to be "revisited."
Mr. Gingrich said the proposal -- which would have affected most of the country's 8.8 million legal immigrants -- was written before Republicans knew they would be in control of Congress and able to find other creative solutions. Insisting that the GOP shouldn't be held to the details of its contract, he said: "We are not going to get trapped into doing something dumb just so you all can say we're consistent."
Unfortunately, some of Mr. Gingrich's colleagues haven't gotten the word. Rep. E. Clay Shaw Jr., chairman of the subcommittee that will consider welfare reform, indicated that he didn't regard the speaker's "offhand comment" as a policy directive.
The legislation introduced by Rep. Hunter would save an estimated $22 billion over five years. That's money the Republicans need to help pay for other welfare reform proposals, tax cuts and other budget-balancing proposals. Admirable as these goals may be, denying benefits to immigrants who observed all the rules and entered the country legally, many of whom work and pay taxes, isn't the way to achieve them.
Moreover, Mr. Gingrich said the proposal was no longer necessary because GOP governors had agreed to accept a five-year freeze on federal money in exchange for state control of the welfare system -- which would save an estimated $40 billion.
The speaker must get the word to other Republicans that there's a new and better game plan on the table.
Hunter! Next question. ;-)
That is exactly what will put Duncan in the same class as those political pea-brains. If Duncan can't win by the time the convention rolls around, he has to concede. If he doesn't know enough to concede, here's another name for you to compare him with, Al Gore.
I he more anti-communist that McCarthy was?
Equally anti-communist, but not as bombastic.
Duncan Hunter is a conservative.
Newt, is, well, Newt. Conservatives don’t have divorce papers delivered to their wife while she’s recovering from cancer surgery...
>That is exactly what will put Duncan in the same class as those political pea-brains.<
You misunderstand. I seriously doubt that, should Rep. Hunter not win the nomination, he would move into another party. However, God willing, he will not quit before the primaries take place. Of that I can assure you.
>I he more anti-communist that McCarthy was?<
God rest Joseph McCarthy’s soul. He was right from the word go. And FYI, Rep. Hunter is not heading up a committee on unAmerican activities as Mr. McCarthy did in the ‘50’s. However, Duncan Hunter is just as anti-Communist as Mr. McCarthy was. Are you?
Dixie, the only one of the current list of candidates who would fit in that group would be Ron Paul IMO...
He's a congressman, he can't head up any committee.
>He’s a congressman; he can’t head up any committee.<
Oh no? What do you think the Armed Services Committee is? He is the ranking member after serving as Chairman for four years. But Rep. Hunter is carrying on a campaign for the presidency plus holding down his day job.
Heading up another committee is not on his agenda just now.
Senators are Committee chairmen, congressmen are Sub-Committee chairmen. Presently, Carl Levin is the chairman of the Armed Services Committee.
There is a House Armed Services Committee
http://armedservices.house.gov/
as well as a Senate Committee on Armed Services.
Live and learn.
Your right, I’m wrong. Duncan Hunter will make a fine VP running mate for Fred Thompson.
Oh come on now.
Dontcha know....... “Duncan would never support Fred.” ;^)
One is a weasel. The other is a rock-ribbed conservative.
&&
You are so right, my FRiend.
They are trying to marginalize Hunter because he might upset the big business people who depend on the labor of the illegals and on our trade imbalance with China.
DUNCAN HUNTER!- If anyone- maybe Hunter Thompson ticket.
NEWT?? HE Choose to Sell Out. Actually- Newt Sold Out years ago and Represents everything that was wrong with Bush’s “NEW TONE” Train Wreck of a Policy!
I have met both AND have KNOWN Newt for a few years JUST before he started to “Drift”-I saw it THEN : It hasn’t gotten better.
