"But he is one of Reagan’s smartest students and most consistent disciples"

I think it's more accurate to say he's one of Howard Baker's smartest students and consistent disciples. He's a better alternative than many, but lets not make him into something he's not.

I stand by my statement.

As J.B.Williams has noted, Reagan wasn’t a radical right-winger:

“Reagan was a Democrat throughout most of his life. Only when the Democrat Party fell under the command and control of ‘60s radical secular socialists did Reagan jump ship, claiming the Republican Party as his new home, after the DNC left him and all other pro-American morally conscious capitalist freedom-lovers out in the cold.”

“Reagan was most conservative in the arena of national security and firm foreign policy...”

“But he was somewhat liberal on social issues. Or, like Thompson, he was at least an anti-federalist, who sought to return private assets and personal liberty to the states and the people at every chance.”

Exactly, in the real world even Reagan was’t “Reagan”.

He was just simply the best President and best mainline Conservative we have been privileged to see outside of Fantasy Land...

There was an interview with Charlie Rose in April 1995 which is on youtube where he addresses this point about Howard Baker. He said Howard Baker was his mentor, gave him opportunities and helped him in his career but Fred is a conservative. He considers that different from Howard Baker [he was responding to Charlie Rose’s question and Charlie indicated Baker was not conservative]. It is a 57 minute interview but a good indicator of ways in which Fred has been consistent, this was filmed after one year in the Senate.

Your comment is not accurate.

There's a whole lot worse choices out there than Thompson and if it ends up that it is Fred T. against Hillary or any other Dem, I'll be desperately hoping for a Thompson win. But I just think Hunter is the best choice out there and the one who's the closest to Reagan's philosophy.

“Reagan was most conservative in the arena of national security and firm foreign policy...”

As is Duncan Hunter. In fact, in my opinion, it's in the area of national security and firm foreign policy that Hunter's edge over the competition is the greatest.

True. But he's got no traction. He's riding on slicks in an ice storm.

Hunter's future lies in hitching himself to the Thompson steamroller.
