Could this be the next Dan Rather type incident?

Over at Captains Quarters, Captain Ed ponders an interesting question brought forth by one of his readers. Apparently, the only evidence of Fred's work at National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association is a copy of the NFPRHA's board minutes from September 14, 1991 that claims that the group had hired Fred.

The big question is, at what point did Fred begin working there? Here's what Captain Ed found.

Now a new bit of indirect evidence has been found. Arent Fox brought Thompson into the firm to be "of counsel" in 1991 for his expertise in their lobbying business, including the representation of foreign governments. Anyone involved in such lobbying has to register with the Foreign Agent Registration Unit at the Department of Justice. Arent Fox filed its registration for its lobbyists, complete with the listings of all its lobbyists -- including their start and termination dates.

Take a look at registrant #2661 in the FARA search system (unfortunately, the results are unlinkable). Fred D. Thompson, according to their records, starts as a lobbyist for foreign business on 10/10/1991 and terminates on 9/17/1993, which is when he decided to run for the remainder of Al Gore's term in the Senate. That gives some indication that Thompson started lobbying for Arent in October and not September of 1991. It's possible that Arent had limited Thompson to lobbying for domestic clients until October, but that seems rather odd, given their desire to have him on board as a major attraction for DC lobbying.

I'd be interested to know when he started lobbying for Arent Fox -- with an exact date. The information on Thompson's association with Arent Fox says that they hired Thompson specifically for lobbying on behalf of foreign customers, which would require the FARA registration with an exact date that such lobbying began. This implies that Thompson wouldn't have been available to the NFPRHA in Septemer 1991, and make the document on which the Times based its entire story somewhat suspect.

I wish there were a way to hear Fred Thompson’s side of it - from Fred Thompson. Maybe we will.

Thompson denies 'pro-choice' lobbying

Thompson spokesman Mark Corallo adamantly denied that Thompson worked for the family-planning group. "Fred Thompson did not lobby for this group, period," he said in an e-mail.

In a telephone interview, he added: "There's no documents to prove it, there's no billing records, and Thompson says he has no recollection of it, says it didn't happen."

In a separate interview, John Sununu, the White House official whom Thompson was hired to contact, said he had no memory of any lobbying and doubted it took place.

Seems pretty unequivocal, unless these people aren't telling the truth.

I like the guy (Thompson). I am skeptical of his credentials, especially when it it comes to lobbying...

Fred has that most wonderful quality on Earth, for a Republican politician:

Teflon!

He is truly, the only potential candidate on either side of the aisle, this poster can imagine, without any difficulty, repeating that true, great GOP leader’s single most powerful example of smooth, understated political discourse:

“There you go again...”

I like Fred. A lot.

The more nervous democrats act about him, the more I like him. :)

This rumor was started by a former Democrat congressman, who subsequently founded the Bradey Gun Grabbers and was one of the principle organizers of the Million Mom March. He is a flaky liar.

And, of course, it was the LATimes that published the story, which ought to tell you how reliable it is.

Even these liars don’t pretend that Thompson actually worked for this pro-abort outfit. They claim that he talked with one of the lawyers who did. And we only have their word on it.

All those facts are going to give the romey & rudy bots headaches.

You should be ashamed that you are using an obviously cooked up story from a ridiculously unreliable source with zero evidence to smear a candidate and his supporters. You should be ashamed to be as disingenuous as to pretend that you would simply accept the story as fact if the words ‘Duncan Hunter’ replaced ‘Fred Thompson’.

You have even gone so far as to compare the 61% majority of FReepers that are supporting Fred Thompson to RudyBots in an earlier thread.

That’s a disgrace and your behavior is shameful and dishonest. In short, you should be ashamed of yourself.

The guy is a former DC lobbyist. The dirt will fly on this guy no matter how much I like him.

Oh the horror. Being a lobbyist is no different than being a lawyer in private practice.

I'm confused on 9/14/1991 do they say they hire the firm or Fred... if you hire a firm why would you have in you minute not the name of the firm but name of one lawyer

The thing is it's nothing if true because as 10/10/1991 he's already hired for something else (mean he was looking before that mean he had no love of the job)....(hell I've done tel-com/computer work for some super hard core left wing wacko...a professional doesn't not ask a customers politics, it would be unethical to refuse a customer with a legit need for the serviced I provide on political grounds)

But if false and the left is manufacturing doc again... this sound like another lib half ass forgery to smear

I hope this story comes back to bite MSM, but the way it has been written about by multiple authors it won't be another Memogate.

I’d like to get as much info on this as possible.

What I want is the truth, so I know which VICE PRESIDENT to support for Duncan Hunter. :)

Won’t be the last, I’m sure. Particularly if you continue down the route of intellectual dishonesty. Such dishonesty is a hindrance to intellectual growth. So, even if you aren’t currently ‘less gifted’ intellectually, if you continue down the path you’ve currently chosen, you soon will be.

Hmmm... another Duncan Hunter fan that keeps passing the big lie that Thompson has not refuted this.
