Over at Captains Quarters, Captain Ed ponders an interesting question brought forth by one of his readers. Apparently, the only evidence of Fred's work at National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association is a copy of the NFPRHA's board minutes from September 14, 1991 that claims that the group had hired Fred.
The big question is, at what point did Fred begin working there? Here's what Captain Ed found.
Now a new bit of indirect evidence has been found. Arent Fox brought Thompson into the firm to be "of counsel" in 1991 for his expertise in their lobbying business, including the representation of foreign governments. Anyone involved in such lobbying has to register with the Foreign Agent Registration Unit at the Department of Justice. Arent Fox filed its registration for its lobbyists, complete with the listings of all its lobbyists -- including their start and termination dates.Take a look at registrant #2661 in the FARA search system (unfortunately, the results are unlinkable). Fred D. Thompson, according to their records, starts as a lobbyist for foreign business on 10/10/1991 and terminates on 9/17/1993, which is when he decided to run for the remainder of Al Gore's term in the Senate. That gives some indication that Thompson started lobbying for Arent in October and not September of 1991. It's possible that Arent had limited Thompson to lobbying for domestic clients until October, but that seems rather odd, given their desire to have him on board as a major attraction for DC lobbying.
I'd be interested to know when he started lobbying for Arent Fox -- with an exact date. The information on Thompson's association with Arent Fox says that they hired Thompson specifically for lobbying on behalf of foreign customers, which would require the FARA registration with an exact date that such lobbying began. This implies that Thompson wouldn't have been available to the NFPRHA in Septemer 1991, and make the document on which the Times based its entire story somewhat suspect.

JDT may be run a good campaign and he may be elected. But if past performance is any indication, I believe he will be a so-so president. I am kinda hoping for a deep down in the gut conservative to be president. Someone who is less willing to compromise on his ideals.
Thompson is an ok conservative but if elected, I think he will end up disappointing many in the conservative movement.
I think I recognized a few tarrers in there.

There you go again. Since you’re backing a guy who can’t break the 1% mark, if I were you, I wouldn’t be accusing other candidates or potential candidates as being “uninspiring and lackluster.”

Keeping my list going from other threads.
1) I’m a pornographer, like Mitt, because he was once on a Marriott Board, and since I pay an ISP for internet services, and since the internet is loaded with porn, I’m a pornographer.
2) I’m an abortionist, like Fred, because he once lobbied for some group and he’s a lawyer, and I once stood in the lobby of a bank, and banks have lawyers, I too am an abortionist.
I wish we could all both compliment and criticize all of the candidates, and compare them so we can LEARN what they all stand for, but I guess that’s difficult for some of us to do.

The reason Fred Thompson is better known than Hunter is because he’s an actor, and that’s a fact.
I happen to like Thompson far better than Rudy McRomney, but Hunter is the most conservative candidate, and I believe folks will find that out.
It’s still real early.

That’s NOT a fact. I lived in California my entire life until five years ago, and I have been aware of SENATOR Thompson for over a decade, and I NEVER heard of Hunter until recently. Just as many people know him as a Senator as they know him as an actor.
Well that’s you, but even political analyst say that’s why Thompson is known, because he’s an actor.
That’s not a bad thing; Ronald Reagan was an actor, and that helped him get known, too.
To tell you the truth I never knew Thompson’s name until he thought about running, because I don’t watch Law and Order.
