BREAKING NEWS: Is Fred getting closer to running? {Howard Baker encouraging Thompson ?}
KnoxNews: No Silence Here ^ | 3/9/7 | Michael Silence

That's what I've been told this morning. Supposedly Howard H. Baker Jr. has told Thompson "it's his time."

I did a quick search and found this: Former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker (R-Tenn.) is contacting powerbrokers in the Republican Party to build support for a 2008 presidential campaign by his one-time protégé, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.).

I have no idea of the veracity of this, and it's all very fast moving.

And there's this: Sources told FOX News that Thompson, 62, now one of the stars of the popular NBC prime time series "Law & Order," has not ruled out a presidential bid, and has authorized advisers and supporters to continue to gauge support.

And this: The Hill reports on mounting rumors that he is seriously considering throwing his hat in the ring for 2008.

Here's today's Hill report that has people buzzing: Former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker (R-Tenn.) is contacting powerbrokers in the Republican Party to build support for a 2008 presidential campaign by his one-time protégé, former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.).

Baker, who Wednesday made a visit to the Senate, was asked by several Republicans about his involvement on Thompson’s behalf.

“He said, ‘I am making a few calls and I think it’s a great idea,’” said one Senate Republican who heard Baker discuss his efforts to advance Thompson’s prospects.

And there's this: More importantly, the fact that Thompson is so clearly testing the waters, particularly when one of his closest allies from his Senate days, John McCain, is trying to establish himself as the candidate of the Republican elite, is quite telling. And it may be that Thompson has the potential to usurp that role McCain is so desperately seeking through his blatant pandering to conservatives within the GOP. According to Ken Herman of Cox Newspapers, former Senate Majority Leader, 1976 GOP vice presidential nominee and 1996 GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole seems to be holding out for a candidate that is not yet in the race.

From TN blogger Bill Hobbs: The Fred Thompson buzz is booming, and the latest to weigh in is Jonathan Martin at The Politico, who writes that he is "more than a little skeptical of Thompson actually running, but one well-connected Tennessee Republican said the Senate Watergate Committee counsel turned Law & Order star is giving it a look."

See poll here. Also, more here.

On the Radio and also on the Fox Report with Brit Hume the panel (you know the regulars on there - Fred Barnes, Mort Kondracki, etc.) said he won't be able to get out of his contract and won't run. But I don't know how much they know about the contract. He might have a clause in it that says he can leave anytime.

I heard that too. They say he's real close to McCain.

Wallace, guesting on Mike Gallagher's radio show this morning, said that on the next edition of Fox News Sunday Fred Thompson will have a "big announcement."

Why would his presidential bid affect Law & Order reruns? They showed his movies while he ran for senate.

I just finished listening to the audio stream of today's Mike Gallagher Show. Wallace's exact words were, "I think he will announce on our show."

"He" being Wallace. And I saw the same interview and agree. However, with Wallace, who knows; he could just be trying to hype the show with Gallagher. He wouldn't get away with that on F&F - Brian loves to skewer Wallace on Friday's.
